WORLDWIDE DAY OF PROTEST AGAINST THE CANADIAN SEAL SLAUGHTER Tuesday, March 15, 2005 Thousands of people around the world representing numerous environmental and animal organizations are preparing for the unified worldwide protest tomorrow, Tuesday, March 15th, to end the largest single mass slaughter of mammals anywhere in the world – the brutal killing of 325,000 harp seals in Canada. As part of Sea Shepherd’s campaign strategy, protests are an integral part of the campaign to generate public awareness and to bring international pressure to bear on the Canadian government to end this horrific slaughter. To find out the details about a protest near you, click on the city links below or go to our Worldwide Protest page. To read more about Sea Shepherds campaign, including details on the only conservation vessel headed for the ice, visit our Seal Campaign pages. Facts about the seal hunt: * The Canadian harp seal hunt is the largest single mass slaughter of mammals anywhere in the world. * It is grossly inhumane. Credible witnesses, including Sea Shepherd volunteers, have seen seals skinned alive and tortured. These incidents have been documented and sealers themselves have bragged and written about how much fun it is to torture a seal. A postmortem survey concluded that 42% of the slaughtered seal pups were skinned alive. * It is an incredibly wasteful hunt. Canadian author and naturalist, Farley Mowat, estimates that for every seal landed, another is shot and lost under the ice, not to be included in the quota. * It is a slaughter done almost entirely for vanity and luxury and therefore unnecessary. * 95% of the seals killed are newborn seal pups less than three weeks old and they are killed in front of their mothers. At the protests there will be informational brochures to distribute about the seal slaughter, a petition for individuals to sign, and information about the boycott on Canadian seafood. Please mobilize your families, friends, and colleagues to participate in this Worldwide Protest. It’s a great way to join like-minded individuals – thousands of them around the world – and show your concern for our oceans. Please pass this information to anyone who might be interested. Thank you so much for all the great work that you do for animals. We look forward to seeing you at a protest!
