Guest guest
GE-Free Initiatives Not surprisingly, California is a leader in the GE (Genetically Engineered)-Free movement. Earlier this year, Mendocino and Trinity Counties banned genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in crops. On November 2, voters in four counties - Butte, Humboldt, Marin and San Luis Obispo - went to the polls to vote on GE-Free initiatives. The law passed in Marin County but failed in the other three. San Luis Obispo activists faced stiff opposition and heavy funding from corporations that profit from GMO production. GE-Free activists are working diligently in other counties including Alameda, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Barbar, Santa Cruz, Sonoma and Yolo. And, Arcata may become the first city in the nation to make it unlawful to " sell, provide, propagate, cultivate, raise or grow " GMO crops. We just learned that Fresno County's Board of Supervisors passed a pro-biotechnology resolution - without a vote of their constituents.
