Turkeys are playful, social birds who enjoy the company of others. When not forced to live on filthy factory farms, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dustbaths, preening themselves, and roosting high in trees. To learn more about these amazing animals, These smart, gentle birds need us to tell their story this holiday. I hope that you’ll take this opportunity to educate others about the horrors of factory farming. Please consider e-mailing your friends and family to let them know why you are having a vegetarian Thanksgiving meal this year and to encourage them to do the same. Feel free to add your own personal touch to our sample e-mail message below, or write your very own. Thank you for being a voice for the voiceless, Reannon PetersonManager of Vegan Campaigns Sample E-mail Message Dear [insert name here], I’m writing to wish you a happy Thanksgiving and to let you know why my holiday meal this year will be vegetarian. Did you know that turkeys are social, playful birds who enjoy the company of others? They relish having their feathers stroked and like to chirp, cluck, and gobble along to their favorite tunes. Anyone who spends time with them on farm sanctuaries quickly learns that turkeys are as varied in personality as dogs and cats. You can learn more about these amazing animals here. While many people think of turkeys as little more than a holiday centerpiece, they are unique individuals who value their lives and don’t deserve to suffer. After enduring lives of pain and boredom, during which they never breathe fresh air or feel the sun on their backs, more than 45 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving meals. You can visit PETA’s Thanksgiving Web site at http://www.peta.org/feat/turk2004 to learn more about turkeys on factory farms. There’s no reason to kill beautiful, intelligent animals to give thanks! I’ll be serving a Tofurky and various other dishes I found at VegCooking.com, like Pumpkin Patch “Cheesecake” and Savory Pot Pie, this Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to enjoying a delicious, cruelty-free holiday meal, and I hope that you’ll consider doing the same. Thank you!
