Guest guest
I've been having a little look into the origins of trick or treating... it is indeed a purely American phenomena originally - first appearing in the 1930s. The confusion leading to a belief in an Irish origin is that the Irish used go from door to door to collect food, drink and donations for the communal festival each year... however, the Irish custom had no costumes, no "trick" if people didn't contribute, and no "treat" for the individuals, just the communal feast. The Irish also generally had representatives of all ages, not specifically children... so about the only thing the two have in common is people knocking on doors asking for donations!
