Guest guest
I have met with the head dietician 7 times, the administrator, her doc is upset with this diet she is given also. I don't want to rick the boat because she is there 24 hrs and I certainly don't want the worry of anyone being mean to her because they are upset with me. The nurses are great, if they see anything wrong on her plate during the day they take it right back to the kitchen. I make sure I supply the nurses with homemade banana bread. One of the members gave me a phone number to call and I have to do this soon, they check in ob the patients meals. Thanks Jeanne, Hugs right back to you, Donna --- treazure noname <treazured wrote: > Donna that is just WRONG! Guest guest
GAH how frustrating! Good idea about not peeving the nursing staff. I feel like a sheep bleating " We have to do something. " I so wish I could help. Are they being deliberately stupid? Too bad we all cannot get together and encircle the place singing " We Shall Overcome " and " Feed Donna's Mamma! " as we did in the good old days. If I get my cognitive function back and have a helpful idea, I'll post it. One good thing from this is that I'm trying to find a way to be a veggie advocate for vegetarians in our local hospitals. I KNOW I am not the only vegetarian in this city and sometimes we end up in Chez Needlez. Hang in there, love ya, Jeanne in GA Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. Try the free Mail Beta. Guest guest
I had a surgery 6 yrs ago and had the same problem. I was able to take care of myself though even if it meant eating bananas, canned green beans and plain pasta for 6 days, poor Mom might eat what they serve her in her mental state and she's lived her whole life not only a vegetarian but 95% vegan so I know she would become very sick from non-veg meals. OK Jeanne we are going to cheer you on as you get your advocate work started. Donna --- treazure noname <treazured wrote: > GAH how frustrating! Good idea about not peeving the > nursing staff. Guest guest
I'm sorry this situation has continued for your mother and you to deal with. I know I would be deathly ill, if I was fed non-vegetarian meals, so I completely understand your concern. I'm glad those nurses are trying to catch things on her plate before they get to her, but that high sugar meal, sounded awful too. Here's to the strength, energy and wisdom you need for bringing this to a healthy outcome for your mom. I worry about the same for my mom, when she may be in a similar situation or for any of us. Judy poor Mom might eat what they serve her in her mental state and she's lived her whole life not only a vegetarian but 95% vegan so I know she would become very sick from non-veg meals. Donna . Guest guest
Donna, I'm so sorry about your mom's diet issues, its a ghastly problem. I was a nursing home dietitian for 4 years and here's the thing, the chain of command is so long in a nursing home (or hospital) that things are bound to get screwed up. The chain of command goes something like this. dietitian recommends diet order based on diagnosis and patient preference MD writes prescription for diet order Diet order is sent down to the kitchen to be implemented, often times this is where it gets sticky. The kitchen staff are generally a very low paid, and therefore transient staff with limited education. They have a hard time deviating from the standard diet orders (ie regular, low sodium, low fat, etc) even though they may be written on the diet card. This is further complicated by the fact that they are generally overseen by 1 dietitian who attempts to check every tray that goes by. (although this is not always the case) By the time the tray makes it upstairs it may not resemble the original diet order at all. Its a ghastly system. Writing it all down reminds me why I left the nursing home and went into the wellness/prevention end of the nutrition business instead. I just thought it might help you to see all the different hands her diet info goes through and therefore all the opportunities for it to get messed up. Hugs and good luck!
