Dear Josey,

Eating honey is not vegan. I understand where you're coming from though, you didn't know what happens to bees.I didn't myself until not too long ago, having only being vegan for about 5months. Anyway, where to begin.. Queen Bees normally live for around 5 years, but many commercial- yep, factory, beekeepers 'replace' them, kill them after about 2 years,so do some backyard beekeepers.Queen Bees from commercial suppliers are transported around the country, during which they are subjected to stressful conditions, being bumped on the way, exposed to temperarures which are either too high or too low for them, and many do not survive. Some beekeepers kill off the whole hive before winter, for economic reasons. Some commercial beekeepers also deprive them of their natural diet, that is honey and instead feed them sugar syrup or corn syrup. Beeswax is what bees use to make their home.So those bees don't actually make

real honey.Bees are fed early for a good start, in other words, they are made to work earlier than normal.Bees die protecting their home. After they sting, they soon die. They are totally exploited, their food is stolen, they're slaves basically. Also the Queen Bee doesn't get to choose her successor, the beekeeper does, through artificial insemination. In the process of checking up on the hive and removing honey, some bees get squashed and die. That isn't extra honey beekeepers are stealing either. In a natural situation, when bees make more than enough honey so there's plenty to go around, they split into 2 colonies, so no honey is wasted.

Here's a great link on why honey isn't vegan with lots of info.

YES!! that's the very link i was trying to find! thank you dragonstarsong, and josey, i had every intention of helping you out.... ~~briijoanne stepaniak also does a great job of explaining in the vegan sourcebook (it's a great weapon to have for the onslaught of facetious to honest "why?"s we all incur!)
