Hello everyone-

Today I got the following e-mail from the Christian Vegetarian Association. I get it, not because I am a self-described Christian, I am not...I just happen to be on a lot of activist lists.

I am just sharing this because I think we would be wise and doing the animals a favor in giving these Christians and Christianity a break. They may be our biggest chance at improving the world. Notice the class on violence on animals and the vulnerable and violence in the world in general. I think that is pretty darn progressive! Maybe we should be more open to Christians and not assume they are like the old time Christians many of us think of from the past. They are at least able to pass out thousands upon thousands of flyers...when at my last veggie demo....those passing by pretty displayed little interest. The religious community maybe our biggest gain in the near future.

Christianity, Violence and Animals will be about the relationship between people and animals with violence as the focus. It will be directed to the professions such as: education, social work, ministry, criminal justice, nursing, science and law. The material also is aligned with peace studies and women’s studies and it will be useful for parenting and personal living.

Our treatment of animals is so horrible as to be beyond description. It is not only unbelievably cruel but this violence redounds to us in spiritual, psychological, and physical ways. The connections between the violence we inflict on animals and the resulting violent behavior of humans will be explored. For example, the stereotypical male domination of patriarchal religion and society and its effects on women, children and animals will be studied.

To offset the violence a program of humane education will be considered. Related scientific findings from disciplines such as psychology and sociology will be investigated. Social work implications and insights will be stressed. Also, the link between a plant-based diet and behavior will be examined. All this will be undergirded by a careful reading of the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, thus presenting a religious basis for a compassionate lifestyle and a dominion of care for all creation.

The workshop will be practical as well as theoretical. Religious affiliation is not required. Vegetarian meals will be shared. There will be an open book exam for students requesting a grade. Readings will be suggested for all students. Registration may be for two or three credits. Students registering for three credits will be required to write a related research paper approved by the director. Non-credit students are welcome. Attendance is required. The workshop has been approved for 30 clock hours toward Ohio social work re-licensing. Graduate credit is available with permission of the Director.

3) Christian vegetarian ministry

Alexandra reports: My family received the copies, and I am please to say that my one sister has decided without her very keen meat-eater-husband's knowledge to revert back to being vegetarian (we grew up vegetarian and were told by doctors to eat meat as vegetarian diets are not suitable for growing children - my mum believed in doctors) - I did not believe the doctors and reverted back to vegetarian ways when I left home, but even though my sister eat very little meat if any at all (it does go down a struggle when once a vegetarian) she had to feed her meat-eating husband.

Now, and this is the good news, she's feeding him vegetarian alternatives without him having noticed! Like shepherds-pie made from soya mince etc. And she said it's since this leaflet came from America about farming etc, so I told her I had it sent to her.

Thanks for your trouble and good work, my family needed that reminder to remind them about the good ways (vege ways) we as a family followed before.
