Wednesday, March 31,, 2004 8 - 9:00 pm

Travel with National Geographic from the arctic

to the Florida

keys to meet a new generation of whale fanatics

-- men and

women dedicated to studying, saving and

preserving the world's

remaining population of whales. (CC, Stereo)

gonna sound incredibly lame and pathetic here....

about a week ago, was listening to Pacifica...i think it was seven generations..maybe terra verde...

anyways....

it was a segment on whales, and how they give birth down in baja and all that...

and the guest was talking about how he runs whale watchin trips down into this certain lagoon, and how lucky they are to be one of the few allowed in there, and all that...

then he goes on to explain how one year, many moons ago, he went down there are was runnin one of his whale watchin junkets...

and this cow brought her calf over the the side of the boat..

and everyone froze....

wot to do? wot to do???

i mean, her fluke was right there, she could have smashed the small boat to pieces...

and, i mean, there is the whole thing about not bothering nature and all that...take only pictures, leave only footprints...

but, the cow was apparantly looking at them, watching..waiting..

and the calf was right there alongside....

soo..finally, the guy took a chance....

and reached over and hugged the calf...

and it came closer....

so, they took turns huggin this calf..while the mother just watched...

for hours they are sitting there, in the broiling baja sun in some little skiff, taking turns huggin this whale calf....

eventually it got late, and they had to dock..of course now they are all sunburned...

well..if that would have been the end of the story, ya could label it a "fluke", no pun intended....

but, year after, they would go down, and first one, then other mothers would bring their calves up to the boat....

like they were showing off, er somehow tryin to show their calves(er us) that not everyone is out to kill em....

and ya have to think....

california gray whales are long lived, assumin someone doesn't harpoon em er they eat a load of plastic er somesuch....

wot are the chances that these whales saw their family er pod members get chased down by some whalin ship?

pretty good i would imagine....

and here they are, bringing their newborns calves over fer a visit.....to be stroked and hugged by a bunch of hairless apes...

am i anthropomorphising ???

prolly

so wot...

all i know is that i was sittin at work listenin to this with stoopid tears runnin down my face...

yeah, my SO sez i'm lame as well...

*sticks tongue out*

fraggle
