They reap enough punishment as it is, with more to follow after death. Meat eaters are more often than not unhappy people. They have problems with their relationships and with their health. I was a meat eater for 60 years myself, and I was not an exception. In 1990 I became disabled, and I know it was because of my guilt over eating my animal brothers/sisters. I knew better, but could not stop. I valued the taste of meat more than I valued the welfare of God's animal children. The irony is that I was active in various animal welfare organizations. What a hypocrite I was ! Thank God those days are behind me. Eating meat has an unfortunate side effect on the human Soul. Each person's conscience protests against eating meat, or using products connected to cruel animal experiments. The conscience knows it's wrong to hurt the animals. But people have free will and can over-ride the judgments of their conscience. By relegating it to such a deeplevel that they no longer are guided by it in any matter at all. As a result we have child abusers, thieves, murderers, lovers of pornography and the vulgar, unmarried parents, unfaithful husbands/wives , disrespectful, out of control children, Men like Saddam and Hitler who commit the most horrible of crimes against humanity without the slightest twinge from their conscience. Anyone who eats meat or exploits and hurts God's animal children is on the fast lane to destruction. I speak from experience. I was one of them. Somehow I had not completely destroyed my conscience. My conscience finally got through to me and changed my nature so much that there is no way I will ever be able to eat or use animal products again. In a way it might be good that I took so long before seeing the Light. My example shows that it is never too late to do what is right. I regret deeply my former ways; I am going to use the rest of my life as an advocate for animal rights. I support PETA, the AnimalLiberation Front, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, ASPCA, and several others. I hope to make a positive difference before I die. I believe that there is a special place in hell reserved for those who hurt God's children, both human and animal. I thank God that I lived long enough to change my ways and avoid eternity in that part of hell, which I so richly deserved. I can only regret my days as a meat eater, the past cannot be changed. But on the other hand, I have the rest of my live to do what's right. I can say with certainty that there is nothing better than to live under the guidence of a clear conscience. As a Christian I have noticed that members of my congregation who ate meet tended to be overly aggressive and overly competitive. We do not have to defend our vegan life style with arguments or persuations, We can lead by example and my testifying to the benifits we enjoy from our positive life style.Rev. Jim

I enjoyed your story very much. Thank you for sharing. I am curious though...what was the final "thing" that made you change? Was it something you read, or saw? Also, if I may ask...what sect of Christianity are you involved in? And, if you want to share...I'd love to know what part of the country you reside in. I am also curious how your fellow parishoners have reacted to your changes.

All the best

  • 1 year later...

We were waiting to catch a ferry, and there were 4 older people sitting

on a bench. My 3 year old daughter went to smell flowers in a big flower

pot directly across from the bench, and one of the older gentlemen said

to her " don't eat the flowers! " . She turned around looked him right in

the eyes and said " Don't eat animals! " They all laughed, and I smiled

and said, well, she tells you what she thinks! Ever since she has

learned about people eating animals, and other bad things that people

do, she has declared that she has a job. When I explained to her what I

do for a living (I'm a non-profit director working on healthy school

foods), she said " Well, I have a job, too, and it's kind of like yours,

but different. My job is to tell people not to put chemicals on their

lawns. " A few days later, she told me she had 2 jobs, and the second was

to tell people not to smoke. The day after that, her 3rd job was to tell

people not to eat animals. Now she regularly tells people she has 3

jobs, and then she tells them what her jobs are. Maybe she's planning on

following in my footsteps...
