I just signed this petition to tell Secretary of Health

and Human Services Tommy Thompson to use his influence to

make restaurants and other public places smoke-free.

If someone were polluting the air in your local park with

arsenic, lead, and DDT, would you be outraged? What if you

also knew that this pollution killed at least 40,000 adults

and children every year?

 

Well, guess what – every time you breathe in secondhand

cigarette smoke, you breathe a toxic soup of more than

4,000 chemical compounds, 69 of which are known or probable

human carcinogens, including arsenic, lead, and DDT.

Research has shown that there is no negative impact on

restaurant sales or employment from such laws. And, such

laws are a tremendous help to the 7 in 10 smokers who want

to quit.

 

So, who suffers from these restrictions? The tobacco industry

does. Philip Morris’ own research found that prohibiting smoking

in the workplace not only reduces consumption but also increases

quit rates.
