Arriving on coaches from all over the country, campaigners were told they were demonstrating against Cambridge University's plans to create a primate research lab in Girton to stop Cambridge becoming "the monkey torture capital of Europe". The demonstration, marshalled by more than 500 police officers from eight forces, brought the city centre to a standstill on Saturday. Protesters met at Parker's Piece, where a two-hour-rally took place before a noisy march through the streets.
