Congrats on your new bub!

 

I would recommend that you go straight to the pet store and get yourself some calcium supplement. My shepherd sure as hell needed it when she was growing, and it is one thing your pup may not get enough of if you are not feeding it pure puppy food. They also need huge amounts of protein for 1-2 years, at least 26% of their daily intake. If you can get some cold pressed oils, you should give 1 tablespoon each of linseed (flaxseed) sunflower and pepitas put through the food processor each day. THis is to give the right balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and a fantastic coat. You can get the first two as ground 'meal' from the health food store too, which can be lots cheaper. Give at least 3 different coloured veg a day, to give a good range of nutrients, and try to varie them. Homebrand frozen veg usually have a mix like potato, carrot and peas (our dogs fav!) also try froz spinach, as that is usually quite cheap. Tofu for protein, and also an egg a day if you can stand it - we got RSPCA approved ones or free range ones from Dad or local farmers.

 

Rice and lentils are a good filler, and each must be cooked, as lentils and beans can produce gasses in their stomachs which may be cancerous. Dry cooked pasta is also good for helping them put on weight and condition.

 

Another big problem is keeping their teeth clean. If you can encourage to dog to eat a raw carrot a day, that is great. You can start by grating it on her dinner, and then introducing chunks. Sometimes you can get 'bones' made from corn starch and other veg stuff at the pet store, but they are expensive.

 

Work them up to 1 teaspoon of garlic a day, and you will never have any trouble with fleas, and their coat will be great. Our shep will not eat her dinner without it now!

 

Hope this helps, as they will need lots of protein, nutrients and lots and lots of calories! I would also be feeding her at least 3 times a day untill she is 6mths old. A tin of baked beans, or a vegemite (or yeast extract equivelent) are great quick meals. BB are high in protien and filling while the yeast extract has vitamin A.

 

It would be great to hear from you again, as it is late at night andf I am sure I have forgotten something! Each of the thimgs I have mentioned have a specific purpose, so don't be afriad to ask me. I would also advise a tablespoon of soy yogurt in their dinner, one with A, B, and C bacteria for at least one month to stop or help remove diarea (sp) from the change over. It can take as long as 1 month to get rid of the bug, even if they seem ok.
