Guest guest
In recent posts people have noticed the combative nature of some of the posters on this forum. When I am feeling annoyed with another person, or I am having critical thoughts about another person, this usually has to do with the mirror of myself that I am seeing in the other person. Here are a set of quotes compiled by someone named Glen O. about the nature of others as our mirrors. Bryan ------------------- If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us. - Hermann Hesse People rarely disclose their character as clearly as when they describe someone else's. - Anonymous We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are. - Anais Nin When you give a shilling to a beggar - do you realize that you are giving it to yourself? When you help a lame dog over a stile - do you realize that you yourself are being helped? When you kick a man when he is down - do you realize that you are kicking yourself? Give him another kick - if you deserve it! - Why Lazarus Laughed by Wei Wu Wei If we were not all so interested in ourselves, life would be so uninteresting that none of us would be able to endure it. - Arthur Schopenhauer Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of witnesses. - Margaret Millar You must be the change you wish to see in the world. - Mahatma Gandhi Consider others as yourself. - Buddha One can always be kind to people about whom one cares nothing. - Oscar Wilde No man remains quite what he was when he recognizes himself. - Thomas Mann The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies by also hate his friends. - Friedrich Nietzsche The man who writes about himself and his own time is the only man who writes about all people and all time. - George Bernard Shaw The people who are regarded as moral luminaries are those who forego ordinary pleasures themselves and find compensation in interfering with the pleasures of others. - Bertrand Russell Want to see a miracle, be the miracle. - Albert Einstein We rarely think people have good sense unless they agree with us. - Francois de la Rochefoucauld War can only be understood and put an end to if you and all those who are concerned very deeply with the survival of man, feel that you are utterly responsible for killing others. What will make you change? - J. Krishnamurti When everyone is against you, it means that you are absolutely wrong - or absolutely right. - Albert Guinon When we are unable to find tranquility within ourselves, it is useless to seek it elsewhere - Francois del La Rochefoucauld A stupid man's report of what a clever mans says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand. - Bertrand Russell Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. - Voltaire What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. - Confucius When we see men of contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves - Confucius When you make a world tolerable for yourself, you make a world tolerable for others. - Anais Nin We are the universe trying to figure itself out. - Babylon 5 Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without. - Buddha Some men see things as they are and say why... I dream of things that never were and say why not. - George Bernard Shaw One learns people through the heart, not the eyes or the intellect. - Mark Twain Each of us literally chooses, by his way of attending to things, what sort of universe he shall appear to himself to inhabit. - William James He who praises you for what you lack wishes to take from you what you have. - Don Juan Manuel Material development certainly contributes to happiness - to some extent - and a comfortable way of life.
