Guest guest
Okay, I'm going to take my lead from Dr. Doug Graham on this one and suggest a target range for greens between 2-6% of total daily calories consumed. The catch is this: if you are not active, then you ALWAYS undereat fuel, and therefore you undereat everything. I have written another article on this, just published this week in the Path of Health Community. Once I receive feedback there, I'll update and share that piece more widely. For now, let me make a few assumptions: 1. Without vigorous activity, you would eat about 2000 calories per day. 2. You engage in activity, using an additional 1000 calories per day. (You burn about 1/3 of your fuel through vigorous activity.) 3. Therefore, you need to eat fuel (I know, you thought it was just " food " ) containing 3000 calories per day. If your target is 4% of daily calories, on average, from greens, then you would seek to consume about 120 calories per day from greens. That's about 800 grams of lettuce. I leave it to you to weigh some lettuce. Head sizes vary considerably, so I would not wish to recommend in terms of heads. Just weigh out 800 grams, then wash and tear it up or prepare otherwise as you typically might, and look at what you have. Rough equivalents: 250 grams of kale, 500 grams of spinach, in round numbers. Many things to Laurie Masters, whose publication The 80/10/10 Success Guide serves once again as an excellent reference resource. (www.GreenSongPress.org). To make greens more appealing, add cut-up fruit! I love it, personally ... mango, strawberry, orange, kiwi, whatnot. (I am particularly partial to whatnot.) That's your DAILY target. Adjust down or a bit for size, of course. I could express in a more mathematical way, if people are interested. ------------------------- Hello Elchanan, Yes, I'm interested. Please express that in a more mathematical way! Also I would welcome any suggestions to make eating greens more appealling, as I currently have no inclination to eat anywhere near the amount you suggest. My natural tendency is just to eat fruit. And are there any greens apart from lettuce that you recommend? Regards Roger Rowan
