Data Interpretation: Stevia

Hi Howard and everyone,

Just for general information ... there is no real food safety testing in the

United States. What is CALLED food safety testing is actually designed to

anticipate liability, if any, expected to occur through lawsuits following

release of a given product. Language such as that used below conveys an

entirely misleading impression ... and I completely understand, as very few

people have really examined the " food safety " testing protocols used in the

U.S. Also, few people who write for popular consumption have any background

at all regarding testing protocols, data analysis techniques, or the like.

No one who had such a background would ever use language such as " found to

be completely safe " , as no statistical analysis method can ever produce such

a result. By this I mean, the mathematics itself is not so designed.

Also, whereas your statistic about Japanese stevia consumption TODAY is

similar to what I find, this does not take into account any history. As I

understand it, stevia was a virtually unknown food additive in Japan until

fairly recent time.

I'm not suggesting that anyone should or should not do or not do anything. I

only seek accuracy.

Best,

Elchanan

Stevia has been thoroughly tested in safety studies and has been found to be

completely safe in the modest quantities required to sweeten foods and

beverages. The Japanese people currently consume the equivalent of 1000

metric tons of stevia leaves annually.
