Guest guest
Hi Caron, At the risk of my sounding a bit silly, would you consider buying him a new cup? Also, in what does he wash his own hands (soap or the like)? Bothersome indeed! My son is very allergic to ants, even the tiny black ones - if they walk on his skin he gets a blistering, burning rash where they touch him. Unfortunately, they love him, or at least his cup of water that he has on the bench beside my computer desk. He often finds his cup full of ants swimming in his water, while mine next to it will be completely free of ants. Today he didn't look before he sipped, and ended up with a mouth full of ants ( I'm hoping that the fact that they were in water, and that I rinsed his mouth out as quickly as I could, will reduce the burns, or he won't be tasting much for a while! I just hope he didn't swallow any... I have no idea why they congregate in his cup - he sometimes leaves bowls with uneaten pieces of fruit in them (when he's had too much) in the loungeroom, and all the empty bowls go in the sink, but they never go after those, just his cup of water. It's doesn't seem like they're after the water, even, because there's often water in the bowls in the sink when I rinse them, and I often leave the top off the water cooler behind me after I refill it (the filtered water is sealed away). Unless they really like the filtered stuff, but my cup often has water in it too, but never ants. I don't like to use chemicals or poisons, for obvious reasons. Does anyone know how I can keep the ants away from him and his cup? Caron
Guest guest
- Elchanan >At the risk of my sounding a bit silly, would you consider buying him a new cup? Also, in what does he wash his own hands (soap or the like)? ) We have lots of cups (all plastic, unfortunately, but I'd prefer food-grade plastic to glass that could damage his feet - any other suggestions for drinking vessels?), he drinks from a normal cup, not a sippy cup, which he never got the hang of, but they're smaller to accomodate his smaller hands and mouth. We don't use soaps (he's got very sensitive skin, and I'd rather not burn him all over, twice a day), except a very mild, natural one that I use to emulsify the lanolin for the nappy covers I knit, and he doesn't often wash his hands, but wipes them well on his shirt or shorts after eating ;o) If his hands are sticky, he'll wash them, but yes, it could be that food residue is on his cup - though they don't go after his empty bowls, or even full ones. We have a bath or shower in plain tap water, usually morning and night (I sometimes use bicarb to wash with), when the weather's warm. It's not like the house is full of ants, either - they did go a bit weird last summer, I had big bull ants coming into the shower, and small black ants in my keyboard and speakers for the computer. The summer before, the black ants were going up the taps on the water cooler. It seems that they're attracted by water and electromagnetic fields, but only some of them, some of the time. Unfortunately, I can't live without water, or my computer ;o) They never go after the sink full of used plates and bowls, or the fridge or cupboard full of fruit, or places on the floor where I stick as I walk over somewhere he's spilt something and not cleaned it up, or told me so I can clean it up.
