It's no wonder restaurants consider soup made with chicken broth vegetarian, etc., with examples like this. Heck, there's even a guy on the competitive eating scene who calls himself a vegetarian yet competes in several meat-eating contests each year. Same with people who eat fish or chicken calling themselves vegetarians. Predicting a backlash against " labels, " let me preempt it by saying they can indeed be useful shorthand when describing what you can eat to a host or asking whether a dish qualifies at a restaurant. So, it's important we are all using the same definitions. BTW, I think the folk of whom you speak in the quote above are now known as " flexitarians " and fish-eaters as " pescatarians.
