Pots Calling the Kettle Black Al Gore and Stonyfield Farms are two stained pots calling the kettle black. Origin: The " pot calling the kettle black " expression dates back to the 1600's. In colonial times, iron pots and copper kettles would become charred by carbon soot from open fires. People accusing others of negative behaviors and then participating in those same behaviors are acting like pots calling the kettle black. This week (September 10, 2007), the Environmental Protection Agency fined Stonyfield Farms for failure to update their hazardous chemicals response plan and for storing an environmentally hazardous chemical at their site, anhydrous ammonia. This toxic gas is a significant contributor to global warming. It is also often targeted for theft by drug dealers as it is used during the manufacturing process for methamphetamines. The private Gulfstream V jet which Al Gore uses (at the cost of about $10,000 per hour) burns 2,700 gallons of aviation fuel for each 60 minutes of flight time. Many people predict that Al Gore will win a Nobel Peace Prize for his anti-global warming efforts unless somebody discovers an enormous cache of weapons of mass destruction in the Iraqi desert and decides that the Bushmeister has stood alone through all of these years with his single-minded purpose and merits such an award. Otherwise, Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize by a landslide. Can anything be more absurd than that? The simple answer is yes. We'll get back to the Stonyfield farms hypocrisy in a moment. Al Gore ignored global warming's biggest contributor in his well-documented documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. The meat and dairy business does more harm to the environment than all of the automobile emissions combined. . Ignoring the meat of the global warming issue (Resource Centre/Environment) ... and Mail writer, Neil Reynolds, wrote an excellent column yesterday, linking meat to global warming and other environmental problems. Here are some highlights: “Livestock emit more greenhouse... August 2, 2007 This year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report called: " Livestock's Long Shadow. " In that document, FAO concluded: " The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. " Cows contribute their share of methane gas with burps and flatulence. Scientists report that methane traps heat more efficiently than carbon dioxide, 23 times more. The FAO report credits cows with 18 percent of the greenhouse effect, which brings me to a recent " Climate Change Symposium " held in New England. This summer, the Stonyfield Farms yogurt company hosted a New England conference whose theme was global warming and climate change. Those attending the conference were greeted by signs which read: " Stonyfield For A Healthy Planet. " One simply has to visit a real Stonyfield farm and breathe in the bouquet of feces and urine to know that Stoneyfield does not represent a healthy planet. Stoneyfield's CEO Gary Hirschberg is proud of his new Internet website: http://www.climatecounts.org How is it possible that neither Hirschberg nor Gore realizes that he is the problem? Somebody get them each a mirror to see and a conscience to feel. Seven years ago, I attended an animal rights conference at Pace University Law School. The keynote speaker on that day was Jane Goodall, known for her studies of chimpanzees. In her talk, Dr. Goodall had described the look of death on a drowning chimpanzee's face. A man who rescued the drowning non-human at a zoo explained why he risked his own life to make the rescue. " Those eyes were asking: 'Won't anyone help me?' " When Dr. Goodall told that story I could hear many people crying and saw many tissues dabbing wet eyes. Jane Goodall receives donations from the same dairy, Stonyfield farms, which hosted an environmental conference. What happens to the calves? Where do the cows go when they no longer are milked? Why does she accept their dollars and endorse their yogurt? Every cow is fated to die a horrible death by the butcher's knife. Calves are separated from their mothers at birth, and mother and child cry a torturous song for many days after. Perhaps Jane will sleep better when she no longer endorses such abuse. I asked Dr. Goodall why she did commercials for Stoneybrook Farms Dairy. Her response to me was that " Organic milk is a healthier product than genetically engineered milk. " We spoke for a few moments about milk and the hormones so contained and we exchanged books. She autographed her book and wrote these words to my daughter Lizzy: " Follow your dreams. " I, along with many other people, love Dr. Goodall for the work she has done. Sadly, by her own actions and support for Stonyfield Dairy, she too is a pot calling the kettle black. Preliminary research indicates that Hass avocados, which are distinguished by their bumpy and dark skin, could help prevent oral cancer. Lab studies at Ohio State University found nutrients taken from avocados killed some oral cancer cells and prevented pre-cancerous cells from growing. Experts think the phytochemicals found in avocados are key to their benefit. For most of us, eating is something we believe we do. However, in this new workshop, Dorit, author of " Celebrating Our Raw Nature " and Certified Organic, Vegan, Living Foods ,Chef and Chopra Centre Educator asserts that we do not do know how to eat. Through a series of exercises practiced during the course of the workshops and at Retreats, Dorit teaches that the process of eating is a very sacred ritual and that true eating begins way before the first morsel of food enters the mouth. This Lifeskills Coach who is a student of many ancient philosophies and traditions , believes that mastication is a lost art form and that we now shovel precious morsels of food in our mouths and immediately down our throats in order to " stuff " whatever we are feeling or experiencing at the time. Participants in the workshops learn how to use colours and decor as well as artistically pleasing/environmentally safe table settings and organic living foods to bring the sense of calm, comfort and connection with self that we so anxiously yearn for. Those who already experienced these workshops found that lifelong battles with excess weight as well as various conflicts with food and anxiety around meal times are not only relieved but that their entire relationship with food has changed. Workshop inclues raw organic lunch!
