Guest guest
Oh darn ~ now I can't eat carrots, beets, turnips, etc??? I juice carrots every day and I've lost 11 1/2 pounds in under 2 1/2 weeks! What does starch do to the body that is bad? By the way, I listened to your recording the other day...very interesting. How can I get hooked up to hear somemore? Thanks ~ Jackie rawfood [rawfood ]On Behalf Of Elchanan Thursday, August 30, 2007 12:44 PM rawfood RE: [Raw Food] carrot juicing? Eat them whole, they are considerably " better " for you. But carrots are not among our species' ideal foods, they grow underground and are high in starches. Food for grubbers. Guest guest
Carrots are just FINE to eat, this is being a little extreme here. It is a very well known, common fact that carrot juice is one of the most basic juice tonics you can take - it is very cleansing to multiple systems of the body. Period. She is juicing these carrots, so that's what matters here. And beets! Lord, juiced beet is the most amazingly delicious substance known to man, in my opinion, mix it with apple and celery and carrot, and you have pure life energy going into your body! You'll love it. As part of a health regimen, some veggie and fruit juice is great, just don't over do it! One cup at a time - though, I usually drink a pint at a time, over an hour, when I do it, which is maybe a little much. In any case, it feels great, and is definitely cleansing. In the end, it IS better to eat these foods whole, but I doubt all you are doing is juicing, right? You're juicing just for that extra little treat? Depending on the juicer you use, you can still get quite a bit of the fiber out with the juice as well - mine is a centrifugal one and I get lots of fiber out with it - very fine quality fiber. Most goes out the shoot of course, but there is still enough to give a good bowel movement. With beet juice it will be neon purple lol! Also, if the starch is bad for you, well then juicing the beet and carrot still gives you a lot of its vital nutrients. So please, ENJOY that carrot and beat juice! It is wonderful stuff. Guest guest
Thanks Joe! I do enjoy my juicing and smoothies...both gives me fiber because I also have the centrifugal juicer and I don't use the strainer that came with it so I enjoy chewing my juice! We usually have a green smoothie from the blender in the a.m. and a carrot combo juice in the p.m. with lots of healthy raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains in between. Although I am having some trouble getting in the grains, and the only seeds I use are flaxseed, anyone have any ideas? My husband and I are 100% raw and loving it! Thanks for everyones help on this group! ~ Jackie rawfood [rawfood ]On Behalf Of Joe Postma Friday, August 31, 2007 10:49 AM rawfood [Raw Food] Re: ELCHANAN carrot juicing? Guest guest
I received this message about beet juice and it can add some heat to the discussion about carrot juice. I just don~t anderstand why something that grows underground shouldn~t be good for us. Macrobiotics says carrots, beets, onions etc are very good for us. Kleber INTRODUCTION: Beet root is a globe shaped vegetable with no soft wet areas. If still attached, it should have fresh, clean young leaves. The beetroot is characterized by dark purple skin and a distinctive purple flesh. Beet root is the best food for health. It contains carbohydrates, mainly in the form of sugar, and it has a little protein and fat. Beet root is a good source of anthocyanadins and it is a natural antioxidant that contributes to violet red colour. Beetroot is used traditionally as a blood building food. The beet juice is considered as one of the best vegetable juice. The protein factors or amino acids are good in both quality and quantity. You've persuaded me. btw, I usually add back in some of the pulp to the juice, (it looks too good to throw away) and is fine for a meal, lasts a good few hours before hunger raises its head. One thing I have noticed is that I feel full without feeling 'bloated', it was quite odd (as in novel) and it has a very nice effect on my urine. neal. p.s. Guest guest
Back in the day, I used to drink a lot of carrot juice. I'd also consume beet juice but the latter was diluted with other juices as J. Kordich suggests in his book that one should never drink beet juice straight up as it is a powerful blood purifier. After years of reading on nutrition (and an eighty-pound weight loss) I've come to the personal belief that natural sugars or " starches " are not bad for you when your daily diet is balances with good fats i.e. avocado, flax seeds, hemp, coconut AND plenty of greens i.e. kale, swiss chard, collard greens. I used to find greens unappealing but this past year I had surgery (due to damage caused in my obese days) and it wasn't healing well so I went on a green juice fast with oil supplements stirred in and saw a dramatic improvement. It taught me that greens are very healing (and they also happen to be quite low in sugar). All that being said, I see carrot juice and beet juice as sweeteners for more bitter green juices rather than things I'd drink alone. According to D. Wolfe beets and carrots tend to be highly hybridized and therefore UNNATURALLY high in sugar. The hybridization process makes this so. Personally, I would never juice carrots or beets without the accompanying greens that grow above ground because the sugar below the ground is what nourishes the greens. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Guest guest
Jackie wrote: > Oh darn ~ now I can't eat carrots, beets, turnips, etc??? Yes, Jackie, you *can* eat root vegetables. Many of us do. Ann Wigmore, and other worthy raw food " names " have recommended eating root vegetables over the years. There are some people who adhere to the fruitarian concept, who will not eat food grown below the ground (i.e. root vegetables) They prefer to only eat the " fruit " of plants, i.e., what hangs off a plant above ground. That is all well and good, and, if they like that, they should continue to eat that way, or, at the very least, BEGIN to eat that way, however not everyone wants to follow such a regimen, and it has never been a requirement for raw foodists. Indeed, many root vegetables contain valuable vitamins and minerals, as well other elements which can heal the body, as well as keep it healthy. Unless you have become convinced that fruitarianism is the way to go, I would continue to enjoy your carrot juice (which has been highly recommended in virtually every serious book on nutritional health and healing that has been published -- at least in the US) I personally recommend carrot juice and beet juice as healthy additions to the raw foodist's diet. turnips are also good. Many people have a hard time figuring out what to do with them, and many do not like the taste of turnip juice, however turnips are a valuable addition to the diet, either in juice or grated as a part of a salad. I think it is important for those who have a specific restrictive focus, i.e., fruitarian, etc., identify themselves as such, rather than simply forbidding innocent people from enjoying nature's bounty. Being raw vegan does not restrict the type of raw fruit or vegetables. Following natural hygiene principles does not restrict the type of fruit or vegetables, either, just the meal combinations.
