Guest guest
Hi Belinda, We've been taught to believe that these athletic girls/women have " lost " their periods. Perhaps that isn't the case and they simply are not shedding (hemorrhaging) blood. The period is part of the cycle, not necessarily the blood. Blood for thought, Janet rawfood , " Belinda " <MistyBlueTN wrote: I too know of girls and women athelets that lose their periods (though I don't know of any that have had children. Good to know that some can have children without the monthly mentrual flow) Anyway, it would seem that the shedding of blood(a little, a lot, or none at all) might have something to do with either the fat intake or the stored body fat or perhaps it has to do with their high physical activity, or maybe all of the above. Belinda I always thought it was strange that a tiny little egg could cause such an uproar on a monthly basis. And, it didn't make sense to me from an evolutionary perspective either. I also thought it strange that women who are athletes would often " lose " their period. I know a woman who says she did not shed blood, and she has three children. She also owns a women's only gym, teaches aerobics everyday, and is physically fit with very little body fat. Interesting. She does eat some cooked food, but when I went to a party at her house, most of the food on the table was raw fruits and veggies. Janet <snip> Cartman is the best!! It's true that it's funny, but it's scary when people start being lured by the messenger and then blindly follow the message. In any situation. For example, it is absolutely untrue that women should lose their periods, that that is a symptom of " great health " . And scary it is being preached as health (only hardcore NH people believe this). So, that is the only context that is not funny.
Guest guest
So, I am still confused on if this is ok to not have one or not. If you have a low percentage of body fat, that seems healthy, so the body naturally stops the monthly, so does that mean it is ok? Janet - great use of language - 'cause an uproar' - LOL! Thanks for the smile. Low body fat percentage in extreme athletes does cause this, yes. They are usually below the general recommendations for women, too, though. So is it a sign of great health then? It really is an interesting topic.
