Guest guest
Hi all, I've been working on adhering to a GF diet on a trial basis of a number of weeks. I am also trying to go dairy free at the same time altho it's hard because I love aged Cheddar & I love yogurt as a late night snack. But my question is, are there any side effects to going on a GF diet right off the bat? Is there anything I should look for or expect? I feel no different in not having eaten glutens than I did when I was eating them. I was tested for Celiac disease a couple of years ago & it was negative but I don know that I could also possibly be gluten sensitive. But I could also be in the big majority that has no trouble with gluten. Anyway, please do let me know if there are noticeable side effects to going on the GF diet. Thanks, Pam
Guest guest
Within a few days without gluten, my stomach is much happier and my dermatitis got better; I have experienced nothing negative. I lost about ten pounds, but part of that was eating smaller and very healthy meals. As for dairy, I thought I was going to miss it the most, but lost my taste for it in about a month. It's been seventeen years now, and I would not dream of going back. The only exception would be if I spent a winter on the northern tundra, but that's not likely. As McDougall recommends, don't spend your time looking for substitutes for your old regulars. Experiment and you will find new favorites. If you want simple vegan recipes easily adapted to GF, and maybe a menu complete with shopping list, look for his McDougall book, about $6 at Half-Price Books. Guest guest
You might feel worn out for a few days, or have digestive issues. I felt better very quickly... Do or do not. Guest guest
Pam, please remind us, what were the health issues for which you originally sought advice from your doctor? Any change in those? It can be tough to give up something one loves, for sure. I too loved dairy products, especially cheese and yogurt. My motivation was my baby's agony. I gave up dairy products in an attempt to help her when she was a nursing infant. It definitely helped a bit, it didn't give her full relief (I didn't know about gluten then) but I was so desperate, I was grateful for even just a little improvement. I have found that to be generally the case; most people seem to need to get very sick indeed before they've cared enough to make the necessary effort to change diet and lifestyle. Guest guest
I, and several people I know, have experienced both gluten withdrawal headaches and an empty, always-hungry feeling for the first while after quitting eating it. They get better, and then you get better, and then, over time (especially if you skip the dairy, too), you get way better.
