Guest guest
Bravo virgo.vegan. I also, avoid pre-packaged foods, and I also avoid wheat and soy and corn because in the US you never know when you are eating a genetically modified food product. Recently, my natrualpath recommended the consumption of a high quality organic whey product for protein. We recently purchased a whey product from New Zealand, but we are otherwise, mostly vegan. What's your opinion about eating whey from a high quality organic source? If I need 20 grams of protein five times a day, can I achieve that with brown rice and beans or other foods? ________________________________ virgo.vegan <virgo.vegan Friday, August 21, 2009 11:24:19 AM Re: Re: getting enough protein isn't the issue If you are retaining weight, it could be that your body has slowed its metablosim for fear it does not know when or where the next calories will come from. It sounds counterintuitive, but you have to eat to loose weight. So sorry you are having these problems. I used to have severe health problems too - I tried a raw vegan diet for a few months and it helped. Now i et no refined or packaged products, about 75% raw fruit and veggies and the other cooked foods are beans or potatoes. ~ Susan On Aug 21, 2009, at 1:31 PM, Jae Jones wrote: > I actually struggle to get that many calories and really try hard > to get > more. Guest guest
Dan, Since you asked, I think whey, no matter the source, is still an animal protein and unnecessary for human consumption. Most people worry way too much about protein and not enough about other vital nutrients (vitamins and minerals). All plant foods contain protein. The way that your body is able to use protein is through amino acids - so really protein doesn't even matter - it is the amino acids you want to look for. I can't imagine why in the world you would need 100 grams of protein? If you are a body builder, there are plenty of vegan body builders and even raw vegan athletes out there who can help direct you for better foods for those sort of purposes. Even the FDA recommends 65 grams of protein if you eat 2000 calories a day (which again, I believe is highly inflated.) I have been studying nutrition for 20 years now - as more of a hobby - I try to go to sources that are not funded by pharma or food industry (which is hard to come by). Many sources agree that we need a mere 10% of our daily caloric intake to come from protein. So if you eat 2000 calories a day, then that would be 200 calories of protein, or about 50 grams (4 calories per gram of protein) - or about half f what you are trying to get. If you are still set on getting your 20 grams of protein, 5 times per day - you can do that without whey. Try these for a few: Spirulina - available at natural food stores and online in powder form - great added to smoothies - there are 4 grams of protein per 1 tbsp of powder. I don't believe any other food comes close to that kind of protein concentrate Hemp nuts - in a single serving - 10 grams of Protein, 2, 000 mg of Omega-3, 7000 mg of Omega-6, 1, 750 mg of Omega-9 Beans are an okay source for protein and can help you meet your 100g per day, but that is a lot of beans to eat Adzuki may be your most protein concentrated beans. http://www.nutritiondata.com/ is a great site for checking the complete amino acid profile of a food. Remember, protein is in everything we eat including fruits (most people believe fruit has not protein). The other thing I question with high protein - is if when we are infants and need to grow and develop the most, wouldn't we need our highest amounts of nutrients at that time in our life? If mother's milk is only about 10% protein and can sustain and infant through at least 6 months of life, then how can an adult ever need more protein in their day to day life? Hope that helps (and that I was not too argumentative - I mean no offense) ~ Susan The Gluten Free Vegan Blog & Natural/Crunchy/Unconventional Living and Mothering Blog have combined: http://virgo-vegan.blogspot.com/ " I expect to pass through this world but once.
