Guest guest
Carrie, congratulations! 'Way to go! You are definitely going in the RIGHT direction! Choosing a whole foods, low-fat vegan diet over medications gives most people results that exceed their hopes and dreams... including me and my own family. I would suggest that you start your first vegan day tomorrow with fruit and oatmeal for breakfast, sweetened with banana and raisins or dates, with low-fat Riza rice milk instead of soy or cow milk. How's that sound as a reasonable first step? Then, sit down at your computer with a nice warm cup of herbal tea and start reading! This elist has a large number of recipes to offer you lots of ideas. We on this list are happy to be with you as a support group, and talking to your friend about what she eats may help too. One of my favourite advisors is Dr. John McDougall who treats all his patients first and foremost with low-fat vegan diet. He calls himself " the luckiest doctor in the world " because all his patients get well, where as doctors who rely on medications have to content themselves with just managing illness. McDougall's website http://www.drmcdougall.com/ offers many resources: recipes, information, success stories, books and DVD lectures that you can buy (or borrow from the library)... all sorts of support to help people learn what they need to know to enjoy making the change in their dietary habits. There are other good medical advisors in this field too: Furhman, Greger, Barnard, to name a few. Many of them are happy to help people via email and telephone conferencing. As time goes by, you may even find a doctor in your area who understands the importance of diet. I made the change to gluten-free, soy-free vegan diet many years ago, gradually improving my choices as I learned more and more about the issues. It can take time to unlearn the old meat and dairy propaganda, so please be patient with yourself. Wishing you all the best, Deborah my doctor wants to put me on several medications because my cholesterol and triglycerides are so high. I don't want to be on the medications... I have a friend who started a vegan diet a few months ago and her cholesterol dropped by 40 pts. I am to the point I'm willing to try a vegan (and gluten free/casein free/soy free) diet, but I don't have a clue where to begin. Any advice for a beginner. I'm feeling very overwhelmed. Carrie .
