I'm only an MOA, but anyway, my Mum was had type II diabetes. I have managed to

avoid this time bomb, so I am sure I am doing the right thing with the

gluten-free vegan diet.

There are omega fatty acids in fruits and vegetables too.

Absolutely, Melanie! ... and that's a good thing.

I'm getting the impression that some people got a very wrong impression from the

original post. For any of you who thought it seemed anti-vegan, let me correct

that please. The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine is a totally

pro-vegan agency. There is hardly a group more pro-vegan really. They would be

astounded and horrified if anyone thought their message was attacking vegan

diet! In fact, they have a large, successful program fighting diabetes based

entirely on vegan diet.

I think there may have been a misunderstanding. As I mentioned to Ronnimike, it

seemed to me that the wording of the report was aimed at the use of fish in the

diet, which some agencies try to promote for their omega 3 fatty acid content.

.... and to simply underline the reality that excess fat of all kinds can cause

problems.

I tell you what: I will email the PCRM and ask them to clarify the message they

were trying to give readers from that report. I will explain to them that it

seems to have come across as anti-vegan to some readers and see what they have

to say. I'll get back to y'all...

I think it's very pro-vegan! The concern I have is the message conveying all

omegas are bad! Too much of a good thing can be bad. Fish is promoted as the

omega 3 source, which we know many vegan sources exist! Omegas are healthy

in the right balance! Vegan diet is the best diet, but many are not ready to

make that choice for themselves. For those who eat animal products, fish may

be the healthiest thing they eat from the animal kingdom. I'd hate to see

those people opting for a cheeseburger instead of the fish because they fear

getting diabetes from the fish. As if a heart attack is better! I just think

that information should not be so biased as to confuse those who choose to

eat meat because those people tend to get pissed off, not listen to

anything, and continue to consume a high fat, meat based diet until they end

up having bypass surgery or dying from heart failure. I personally know

people, mostly men, who eat excessive amounts of food. One normal meal for

one person (to them) is a 16 oz steak, 3 cups of mashed potatoes made with

milk and butter and loaded with beef gravy, and half a can of corn! Just

looking at this meal purely from a nutritional perspective, it makes you

sick! An equal amount of food would feed me for 4 days, maybe 5! I encourage

these people to cut back to 4 oz of meat and load up on healthier vegetables

without all the gravy and butter. You don't have to force veganism onto

people. Just help them cut back on all the meat and fat for their health's

sake! With my family, I make vegan versions of foods I know they like and

ask if they'd like to try it. My mom and sister are addicted to my spinach

artichoke dip, which is a lot healthier than their old dairy based recipe.

My man, who was one of the 16 oz steak eaters, is now considering becoming a

vegetarian, although not quite ready to take the leap, he is making a

conscious effort to cut back on meat and eat more fulfilling vegetables. We

have been together almost 6 years now and I never once forced any views or

foods on him. I simply ask if he'd like to try it. He's getting to that

choice of his own free will!
