Guest guest
My iron levels were so low that I had to have an iron iv in Jan. 08. It was expensive and only last around 10 months then my levels were low again. I started seeing another doctor after that experience, and he told me to take floradix. Guest guest
That's an excellent testimonial if I've ever heard one. I'll definitely check this out at my local health food store..... that is if I can work up enough energy to get there. I'll also check out the gluten free version. I really look forward to this. May I ask, about how long did it take before you noticed a difference in your energy level? My doctor has been pushing to do a bone marrow biopsy because he does not think iron deficiency is the problem. Guest guest
Just to be sure that you are aware, active gluten intolerance is a common cause of extreme anemia. Are you being 100% gluten free with your diet? Also, are you taking Vitamin B12? Lack of sufficient dietary B12 is also a common cause of persistent anemia in many people, not just vegetarians. Guest guest
Everybody is different. I think the biggest concern many people have is the excessive use of medications and supplements. There is a lot of info in magazines, online, etc about how various supplements help certain conditions and very rarely is there any information about precautions and limits and what should not be mixed. Many people assume it's just a vitamin so it's safe. You can overdo it and too high of levels can be just as dangerous as too low of levels. If you have a deficiency a supplement may be appropriate. It's easier and less painful to swallow a pill than to get your bone marrow tested. However, if the problem persist, other testing should be done to find the source of the problem and treat it before it becomes too serious. If your doctor feels supplements are appropriate for you to try then there shouldn't be a problem. If your levels are low it's unlikely that you will have a problem with overdosage. Your doctor will be testing you often so there really shouldn't be any concern with taking iron. I have been so severly anemic my entire life and before starting IV iron therapy I was taking 5x the daily recommended dosage of iron with folic acid, vitamin C and B12, and my levels where still at 2.4! Now they are close to normal, but still a little low. About 3.5 points lower than normal, but the doctor said it's fairly normal considering my diet. Not eating meat will make your levels slighly lower than normal, but they shouldn't be significantly lower. Ask for exact numbers because of being vegan you should make sure that your low really is a concern and not just vegan normal! Guest guest
Yes they are but sometimes you need to supplement because you don't get enough from diet alone. I have to take folic acid suppliments every day because I don't get enough from diet alone! I only eat about 1 meal a day and from that one meal I only absorb about 1/3 of the nutrients. Absorbsion is a big issue for celiacs! I also have chronic pancreatitis, which limits my ability to eat a normal adequit diet and further complicates my ability to absorb nutrients. Everyone here has digestive concerns and though it's avegan group and we may assume everyone here is eating whole fruits and veggies, they may not be! I know a lot of vegans/vegetarians that constantly snack on junk because they don't know what to eat other than salad and they get bored with that! Folic acid is needed to store iron in the body so that our bodies can use it. If for whatever reason your not getting enough folic acid, it could be the cause of anemia. If for whatever reason you can not get enough folic acid, or any other nutrient, from diet alone, supplements can be very beneficial! That's all I'm trying to say here! Guest guest
Renee, I was reading an article at Dr. Mercola's site about certain types of iron supplementation. There are other similar articles on the net. You might want to read up. Apparently the issue is an excessive amount of iron that too many supplements deliver. The article also discusses iron deficiency possibly not being the problem but other vitamin, mineral deficiencies. I like the idea of a liquid supplement that can be taken in small doses. Take a look at the article and maybe you can discuss this issue with your doctor. Guest guest
Are you drinking black, green, herbal, or a combination of all kinds of teas? Black tea (regular tea) is a diuretic. Can interfere with absorption of nonheme iron and many medications. Increased excretion of both calcium and magnesium when taken in large amounts. All the teas can interfere with medications and complicate health issues, but each one has different contraindications. Green tea will interfere with warfarin, a blood thinner, and those taking blood thinners should be careful as too much green tea will throw their levels off, complicating their condition. There's a whole list of medications it can interefer with. Green tea can cause heatburn, gastric irritation, and loss of appetite. German Chamomile may interfere with absorption of ferrous sulfate (Feratab, Fer-Iron) and iron-dextran complex (Dexferrum, INFeD). May worsen asthma. There's a whole list of medications it can interefer with including asprin and asprin based products (advil, motrin). I have an Herb-Drug-Vitamin interaction guide so any specific tea/herb/medication you'd like me to look up I'd be happy to. Guest guest
The nature of an online group like this is that it is co-created by *everyone* who participates. There is no 'fair' or 'unfair' to it, unless you have an issue with how moderators are handling your and others' posts. Rather than complain about what you are not receiving from the group, you can make requests for what you would like others to help you with--in this case, any recipes you are looking for. (You can also go through the very extensive recipe archives, which include a broad range of offerings.) Other than that, you have the simple option of deleting email threads that aren't offering what you are seeking---which is especially easy when you're receiving them through Gmail, which offers them to you. You can also remove yourself from the group. I think that there are probably very few of us who find every thread in here exactly what we have been seeking. But some threads are what we want or need---or we find ourselves learning from ones that we didn't think would initially be something we want to read, as has happened for me several times---so we stay for what we get . . . and also for what we can offer. Guest guest
That's great Pam! Dairy products are notorious for creating anemia so getting rid of them would have helped, as well as your increased intake of vitamin C with more plants foods. When you went vegan, did you increase your intake of whole foods diet and reduced your intake of refined foods? Deborah Funny enough, I was always anemic until I went vegan. Then for the first time I had normal levels! And I could never take iron supplements because they make me throw up. Even a " women's " multi has too high a level of iron for me. Pam . Guest guest
You can switch to Rooiboos tea because it has no caffeine and actually provides some iron: win/win! http://www.africantea.com/Rooibos-Health/rooibos-health.html Honeybush has a slightly different flavour and similar advantages. http://www.itmonline.org/arts/honeybush.htm Warning: you may find them both rather " flat " initially because of the lack of the caffeine and tannins of black tea. Once you get through the caffeine/tannin withdrawal, you may find yourself enjoying these even more than black tea. They provide the warm, comforting effect as a nice cup of tea and you can feel good about the health benefits. You may start sleeping better too! Deborah i drink tons of tea all year...about to get my periodic blood tests...used to be anemic before celiac diagnosist but never thought tea might have contributed. i love tea! what will i do??? . Guest guest
No, not particularly. I eat mainly whole foods now, but back then, it was soy milk, veggie burgers, veggie pepperoni, cheeseless pizza, boxed cereal, canned beans, fries, corn chips, bisquick, rice mixes, etc. Pam On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 9:37 AM, Deborah Pageau<dpageau wrote: > > > That's great Pam! > > Dairy products are notorious for creating anemia so getting rid of them > would have helped, as well as your increased intake of vitamin C with more > plants foods. > > When you went vegan, did you increase your intake of whole foods diet and > reduced your intake of refined foods? > > Deborah > > Funny enough, I was always anemic until I went vegan. Guest guest
I started feeling better after two months, but I had to stay totally gluten free while taking floradix. The doctor that administered the iron iv told me I didn't have celiac after he ran another test, which I don't recall the name at this time. So, I started eating wheat again, which eventually returned all of my previous symptoms. After 6 months had passed and I was feeling great, I started eating wheat again. I know this is crazy, buy I had a hard time believing wheat could invoke so many devastating health issue. Today, I have to continue to remind myself that my system sees wheat as arsenic. Also, I have to ignore good intention friends who tell me to eat a little wheat or place a little under my tongue to become desensitized. I said all of that to say that floradix worked for me but I have to stay gluten free. -------------- Original message from " D GRADISKA " <allegria47: -------------- That's an excellent testimonial if I've ever heard one. I'll definitely check this out at my local health food store..... that is if I can work up enough energy to get there. I'll also check out the gluten free version. I really look forward to this. May I ask, about how long did it take before you noticed a difference in your energy level? It was expensive and only last around 10 months then my levels were low again. I started seeing another doctor after that experience, and he told me to take floradix. This has been the best supplement/meds that I've ever taken in 20 years. Pamela -------------- Original message from Valerie McGowan <vsimone316<vsimone316>: -------------- You're welcome! I've read so many negative articles about supplementing with iron as excess amounts are even more harmful, apparently, than too little in the system. I think I'll give Floradix a try and up the dark greens and vit c with meals. I was diagnosed with anemia a few months ago as well. I wonder what you all may do when/if you encounter this condition? I know iron supplements are not the way to go and I'm sure not going to chow down on a steak. Any help would be appreciated. Of course, my doctor told me to start eating meat. That's not going to happen. Thanks, Diana
Guest guest
I had several doctors tell me I wasn't celiac because the blood test where negative and the one scope I had 3 years after being gluten free looked normal. I quit eating wheat on my own because it got to the point I literally couldn't swallow it. My current GI is the one who did a biopsy and sent it to a lab for testing that came back as showing treated celiac. I cheated a few times in the beginning, getting very sick! I think most do. It is difficult because we are raised in a wheat world and it's hard to wrap your head around it all. Take meat and dairy out of the equation and it seems impossible! I remember ordering food at restaurants without meat and getting the response " How am I suppose to do that? " I remember thinking to myself at those times " how stupid can you be! " but then when faced with all this gluten free stuff it really dawned on me that in general we are conditioned to know our food to be a certain way and when you take the norm away we are essentially deer in headlights. I think that's why many start out snacking all the time because we don't know what to eat. " These chips and that candy bar are safe and I just found a cereal that's good and safe but it's full of sugar, but I'm hungry so I don't care! " It takes an adjustment period to get use to it all. Once we do and learn to eat whole foods and get the nutrients we need we not only feel full and healthy, but very much empowered! And that's a good place to be! Lately there has been talk about peanut allergies and exposing allergic kids to very small amounts in a controlled hospital environment to desensitize them and cure their allergy. This is probably where friends get the idea from! Celiac is not a true allergy. It's an autoimmune disease! Doing these little experiments will not work! Even with true allergies, there are many who will never be cured by this! You are right for not trying this. It will only keep you sick and we've all been down that road already! I definately don't want to go back! On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 6:59 PM, <pamela-9 wrote: > > > I started feeling better after two months, but I had to stay totally gluten > free while taking floradix.
