Guest guest
I'm reminded of the adage that one cannot be 'a little bit pregnant.' one option might be to remind that even ingesting 'just a little bit' of bleach or cyanide is harmful, and anyone with severe allergies can attest as to what their allergens can do. be well, DDP tbozek77 > My son just started a gluten free diet and has been doing so much better (he's 21 month old - and is now putting on more weight to along w his height) any way - I get that line all the time 'just a little won't hurt' (from family mainly) > what are some nice ways to combat/explain this gently? Guest guest
For family members that will not comply with the diet, we will not go to family dinners and events where food is out. The worst offender in our family - my BIL - has just had to put his granddaughter on a gluten-free diet, and remove multiple food allergies, so I think that we will have an easier time of it in the future. I do make a point of mentioning that after we visited them, DS went home and threw up the rest of the night if they have given him something illegal. We do take all of our own food places like this, but it just got to be too much of a hassle. In spite of what we brought, there would just be too much illegal food around for DS to grab when no one was looking, and he would feel sad at not having their special treats. We just say " we'll come over for a visit after supper " and hope that they won't leave food out. Keep in mind that my son is 11 yo and quite capable of disappearing and making a quick grab for anything tempting, and has very poor impulse control. I have really just gotten my husband to the point where he will not allow DS even a little gluten or dairy. Previously he would still give him chocolate bars, sour cream chips, etc. because there was just a little gluten or dairy. He has finally figured out that just a little dairy will make DS violent and much more difficult to control, and will give him cramps and diarrhea. And gluten will make him throw up. It's hard when you can't point to the physical indicators because there is not an obvious enough reaction. If he is celiac you can talk about what gluten actually does to his intestinal lining and chance of getting cancers or other auto-immune diseases. Guest guest
my husband used to say, a little gluten is good for Kierstin (our daughter) like bleeding is good for the veins.
