Guest guest
A newcomer to this group, I have recently figured out I'm gluten intolerant, but have been following the McDougall plan for nearly seventeen years now, and it has helped tremendously. I did think I was going to miss cheese the most, but within a month, had completely lost my taste for it, with one exception. (The sweetness of cream cheese made it a little harder to part with.) I like McDougall's approach of 'eat all you want, of the right kind of foods.' He also says that instead of finding substitutes for favorite foods, a person is better off finding new favorites. That worked great for me, until my gluten intolerance became apparent, in the past decade. With a little adapting, the recipes adapt well. The bigger problem is because of my oats allergies, as I now have almost no cold cereal or bread choices. GOOD NEWS- I noticed today that Corn Chex is now gluten-free! Now there's an option other than paying $4 for a tiny box at Whole Foods. (Whole Paycheck) For cookbooks, I would recommend The McDougall Program to start, and The New McDougall Cookbook. The earlier versions, volumes one and two, do have some good ones and address the issue of kids and vegan meals. One of the kids' favorites I like to use is 'orange mashed potatoes.' Carrots cooked with the potatoes then mashed together, giving it an unusual color; I like to stir in green peas. Broccoli cooked and mashed with create a bright green dish. I'm glad to learn of Dr. Fuhrman, and the recipes in the files of this group; once my kitchen is clean, want to start experimenting.
