Guest guest
Lisa, I understand what happened now. While the doctors you saw speculated that her increased cholesterol and weight gain was due to eating " too many carbs " , I expect McDougall will tell you that the source of your daughter's weight gain may actually be too many calories from fat. As McDougall says " The fat you eat is the fat you wear " . I think your daughter has been suffering from hidden calorie density. For example, someone looks at a plate of french fries and says " Too many carbs! " when really the majority of the calories on the plate is from fat. The same quantity of potato baked plain is less than half the calories. Fat is more than twice as fattening as carbohydrates. Sadly, it is also fat that we tend to particularly like to eat. :-) Low-fat vegan diet is ideal for weight loss and lowering cholesterol at the same time. Here's McDougall's article on excess weight. http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_obesity.html Here's his page with people who have undertaken low-fat vegan diet, lost large amounts of weight and cured all manner of illness. Some of the stories are video, others are just to read. http://drmcdougall.com/star.html Here's his Maximum Weight Loss Program that you two can follow step by step: http://drmcdougall.com/store_mwl.html Here is the weight loss discussion board: http://www.drmcdougall.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=11 & sid=fe46540e71fd6c0eb275c29\ 05d461f97 If you two can manage to go to one of his live-in 10 day programs, that would be the best. The McDougall diet is a lifestyle, not a diet per se. It's not something you do to lose weight, then return to the old diet. It is the natural, healthy way to feed human beings that naturally results in weight normalization. Wishing you all the best.... Deborah My daughter had cholesterol of 180 a year ago and now it is 230 and she adopted the vegan lifestyle 6+ months ago. It does seem strange, but true. The numbers on the test indicate that she was eating too many carbs for her body. I confirmed the diagnosis with a completely different doctor as a second opinion. I didn't know about the b12 issue and I will have to see if it is included in my current supplements. As far as lowering my daughter's cholesterol and helping her lose 15-20 pounds is the current challenge. I checked out the Macdougall website and just d to the newsletter. It does not seem as though he focuses on weight loss at all. It would be wonderful if we could focus on both issues at the same time. I appreciate all of the ideas and opinions you are sending me. It seems like there is not going to be an easy solution. Lisa .
