Not all baked beans are vegan in the UK.Heinz are, but Crosse & Blackwell are not. You still need to read labels I`m afraid....

The premade jelly pots over here went vegan for a while at the height of the mad cow crisis, but reverted back quite quickly. There are vegan crystals here but only available from health food shops.

You know I`m considered to be a big kid, pack me some pleeeeeeeease, or I`ll scream and scream and scream!

you'll find that if you want "snacks" that are healthy and wholesome, you hafta make it yourself. otherwise, store bought snacks that are healthy are hard to find.

plus it's less packaging for the enviroment. :)

 

I don't think that my kids missing any vitamins, also without the competion from food commercials on tv, its easier for me.

i'm still sorta lost here..

they make crystals..that turn into jelly?

strange

are we talking the same terms here?

jelly are like preserves...marmalade...

spread it on toast

 

jell-o is gelatin..everyone calls it jell-o..

comes in a little packet and you add boiling water to it...let it cool and you

get. well..brightly colored dissolved cow parts...

but..anyways...

to go back to the first part of this thread...

jell-o is kosher..just not vegan

(they make vegan gelatin's, but, not exactly the easist things t o find..)

Just Wholefoods Vegetarian Jelly Crystals - Raw Cane Sugar, Carrageenan,

Locust Bean Gum, Natural Fruit Flavours, Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate. Mix

with boiling water and leave to set. Very tasty. www.justwholefoods.co.uk

 

The cupsize tubs of Rowntrees readymade jelly from supermarkets says it is

vegetarian and the ingredients listed made it vegan, when I checked,

although I have never bought one. The slabs of jelly cubes that you can

make jelly with have gelatine in though.

EWWWW I never knew that about jell-o. I mean I tried it once and I

hated it, but EWWWWW. my mom tried to give bryanna jell-o once. She

ate about 2 bites and spent the next half hour puking, and broke out

in a rash....so we figure shes alergic to something in it. I am

assuming the crystals arent made out of the same stuff, right?

Fraggle, Jell-O is NOT kosher! You need to remember that because someone

advertises something as something doesn't make it fact. This is one of

those cases.

 

For something to be kosher there are certain rules that must be followed.

One of the rules for beef is the way the animal is killed and it has to be

done under the supervision of a rabbi. Jell-O doesn't not buy kosher, they

buy whatever they can get. And kosher wouldn't include the hides which the

geletin that Jell-O uses has in it.

They are crystals that you had boiling water to and they make jelly or jello

as I think you call it. You leave it to set for a couple of hours.

 

What you call jelly we call jam.

jell-o(jelly to those across the pond) is generally made with gelatin...

u can also make it out of agar agar, er the root of the kuzu

hain makes a vegan jell-o...

EWWWW I never knew that about jell-o. I mean I tried it once and I

hated it, but EWWWWW. my mom tried to give bryanna jell-o once. She

ate about 2 bites and spent the next half hour puking, and broke out

in a rash....so we figure shes alergic to something in it. I am

assuming the crystals arent made out of the same stuff, right?

Well, sort of, Jo. We divide the whole fruit spread stuff up into jelly

(strained and clear), jam (thick and lumpy with fruit), preserves (thick and

junks of fruit), butter (dependant on method of making) and marmalade (yuck,

yuck, yuck, usually citric with zest <g>).

 

Us cooks know what you are talking about because jelly is simply something

clear that is flavored and jells. One can get really confusing if you add

cranberry sauce into the mix as it would technically be a jelly unless who

use the whole berry sauce <g>

I'm Jo, 64 years old, married to my best friend for 46 years and have 3 adult

children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. My hubby has M.S. as well

as Neuropathy and Diabetes. This year we found out that I have Systemic Candida

and having the hardest time getting it under control. From what I have been

reading and hearing, I am thinking that gluten free might be the way to go for

me. So, am looking forward to being part of this group and sharing and learning.

Jo, welcome to the group! You've come to the right place. I'm glad you told us

about your hubby's health issues too because we have GREAT news for you!

 

As you will have noticed, this group supports vegan (no animal products) diet as

well as gluten-free. A low-fat, vegan diet has been conclusively shown to put

MS into remission. Like with avoiding gluten for those of us who are sensitive

to it, sticking to the low-fat vegan diet those with MS is necessary... ie.,

it's not a " cure " for the condition per se but it does get the symptoms under

control and prevent more from developing. If you'd like more information, I can

post some websites for your assistance.

 

The same low-fat, whole foods vegan diet has also been repeatedly shown over the

past 20 years or so, to be MORE effective at controlling Diabetes than the

high-protein, low-carb diet that was the standard recommendation for so many

years. I will also happily post references for you on this, if you'd like.

 

Gluten intolerance is also often associated with diabetes.

 

To get Candida under control, avoiding refined foods is essential, particularly

sugar and flour. You need to eat whole foods which tend to be lower on the

Glycemic Index anyway (also of benefit for those with Diabetes), so fortunately,

the same low-fat gluten-free vegan diet would work for both of you!

Deborah, thanks for the welcome. Yes, I would really appreciate you

posting those websites for me. On top of everything else, we got a phone call

from hubby's primary care dr yesterday that the MRI that he had last Monday

and the lab work for the liver aren't looking very well and now he will

probably be scheduled for a endoscopy type test. I knew that this was the right

group for us and we are really trying to work on health challenges here.
