Arico Foods is also recalling their peanut butter cookies and bars but only

a certain lot number. They sourced with PCA only once and have discontinued

doing so.

Can someone explain to me how salmonella gets onto peanuts? Is it naturally

occurring?

It's the processing plant. It got in through bad practices at the plant or

a worker's unclean hands. I've heard the processing plant was in an awful

condition, but that the FDA inspector still gave it a passing grade even

with it looking awful. (The plant is in Georgia, where I live.) I'm not sure

if that's true, but I know it's been the case previously (with spinach and

such) that it's been just as likely that a worker with diarrhea who wasn't

washing his/her hands caused the salmonella spread as much as anything else.

Or crops being fertilized with raw sewage, that's a big one too. Or

migrant workers not being allowed to take breaks, and just going in

the field. I have heard some pretty awful things about this

particular processing plant. They have had a number of internal tests

showing salmonella, but they don't have to report them to anyone or do

anything about it.

I believe in this instance there were some egregious hygiene issues

found at the processing plant - mold, feces, etc. Salmonella is

animal-based, in this case contamination likely came from animal feces -

birds that swarm peanut plants or rodents inside the plant. Because PB

is so high in fat it is a " good " carrier for such contamination.

Forgot to add that it is basically just another justification for the

powers that be to irradiate our food supply, which the jury is still out

on in terms of safety and nutrient loss.
