Guest guest
Hi parents, There was a question posted today on the mamapedia.com list regarding margarines. The mom has 1 child no dairy and 1 child no corn. Earth Balance lists under natural flavors a corn derived product. She's looking for Willow run which is like 80% partially hydrog garbage. I read my tub of Smart Balance Light with states it's vegan, but doesn't state what it's natural and artificial flavors are. Has anyone traced this information down? Our family uses EB most the time, I just got this SBL last time as it was on sale for $1.59! Any other options out there that I could suggest to her? She says she uses canola & olive oil for some things, but there are still times when she needs a spread. I'm asking what foods the oils don't work for in hopes that I can think of an alternative for that individual situation. Thanks for any help Lina
Guest guest
My seven month old was showing signs of an allergy, and I finally figured out that it was corn! We've been EB users for a long time, so imagine my dismay when I read the same thing the other mom read!! (I breastfeed, so what I have, he has...) Well, I saw the Willow Run and also didn't like the 'hydrogenated garbage' as you put it. I found Spectrum has a non-dairy, non-corn spread. It's okay in flavor and is good on toast, etc. and can be used in things like dumplins or pie crust where you cut in the butter. You can't fry with it though and it doesn't melt real well on toast. I and my two girls definitely prefer the Earth Balance. After I was off corn for a month, I tried small things that listed a derivative of corn in the ingredients. Turns out that the Earth Balance spread was okay and didn't cause a reaction in the nursing baby. It might be the same for your friend or it might not. I believe the Smart Balance and Earth Balance are made by the same company, just for different markets, so I would guess the natural flavors would be the same, but the mom could always email the company and see. Also, coconut oil is great for frying stuff to add some extra flavor. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Becel has just come out with a vegan spread -- at a glance there is no corn in the ingredients, but I don't know if anything is derived from corn: http://www.becel.ca/en_ca/products/vegan.aspx Heather On 13 May 2010 11:59, adobedwellers <linaeasom wrote: > > > Hi parents, > > There was a question posted today on the mamapedia.com list regarding > margarines. Guest guest
Personally, I would MUCH rather use partially hydrogenated products than ones with " artificials " in them! I mean, it's a matter of " choose your poison " when it comes down to it, but artificial colors and flavors are derived from petroleum! And they cause all sorts of health, learning, and behavioral problems, too! No thanks--I'll stick to the hydrogenated oils. Proof once again that " vegan " is not always synonymous with " healthy " ! Many vegan cookbooks have recipes to make your own homemade margarine. It's quick and easy. My favorite recipe uses millet as the base, and contains no corn. But there are enough recipes out there to pick and choose. The Food Allergy Survivors Together website has a recipe for margarine that's quick, easy, and uses 100% palm oil as the base. I've used that one several times myself. You can use Jungle brand, Spectrum Naturals, or 365 (Whole Foods) brand shortening for this recipe. All are 100% palm oil. I just leave out the butter flavor in the recipe because butter flavor is dairy, or it's artificial--neither is an option for me. If she can handle it, your friend can use a tiny sliver of ghee for the buttery flavor, and a teeny sliver of cooked carrot, or India Tree all natural food colors for the yellow color in the recipe (or simply leave it out, as I have).
