Guest guest
Dawn--As to homeschooling, of COURSE you're " qualified " --you're his mother! You've been teaching him since day one. Homeschooling is not anything more than an extension of what you're already doing. Believe me, if you had to be organized, have a teaching degree, be patient, be....fill in the blank here....almost no one would do it! You can be SURE that I, a mother of nine kids, six still at home, three of whom have special needs, do NOT have patience enough to do this, nor do I have a teaching degree. But we sure do have a great time, our family is really close and happy, our lives and schedule are our own, and the kids are learning just fine, thanks. Most former teachers who homeschool will tell you their education and experience was actually a liability when it came to homeschooling. They have to unlearn a lot of institutional school ways of thinking and doing things. And as for socializing--there are more groups, clubs, organizations, and social opportunities for homeschoolers than there are for kids in school, because we can get together anytime, not just nights and weekends. Most homeschoolers find themselves overwhelmed with the choices for their kids. It's really funny how " socialization " comes up as one of the first questions asked by people who don't homeschool--and it is the absolute LEAST thing to worry about, in reality! Next comes " But what about algebra/quantum physics/college? " . And yes, there's an aswer to those, too, but I simply refuse to give it to the mother of a preschooler! LOL! Just my viewpoint, FWIW. Guest guest
I have to totally agree!!! I just started " officially " homeschooling my 6 year old (1st grade) this year, but in all reality I've been homeschooling him since he was born! I also have a daughter, 4 who I'm doing a little pre-k with. We just moved to Las Vegas a year ago and like Marilyn said, I am so overwhelmed at this point with all the homeschooling activities that are going on in this town. I tend to skip the park play dates and just do the educational things. But with co-ops, field trips, museums, tours etc, on top of their regular dance, bowling, boy scouts etc...we never run out of things to do and socialization is certainly never going to be an issue! Plus I like the fact that my kids are growing up in the real world and not isolated in a classroom, with 35 or so other kids of their exact same age. We are vegan, so it's so easy to keep with that. We just bring snacks where ever we go and even though we are the only vegan, most people who homeschool tend to be very accepting of any alternative lifestyle, after all, homeschooling also falls into that catagory, so nobody looks at us any differently. And in my experience a lot of moms go out of the way to make sure to have healthy snacks at events and something vegan and gluten free for those who do that. And since you really get to know the people in your homeschool community, they get to know you and understand your diet. No one has ever given my kids any food with out asking me first if it was ok. Although I do have a BFA, I don't think it is necessary to have a degree to teach your kids. We follow a curriculum, everything is laid out for me and honestly, nobody knows their own child more then their parents. You will never find a one on one teaching environment in a school and how can a child NOT succeed with that. ~Anna In a message dated 3/26/2010 5:16:21 A.M.
