Eating veggie in Italy

We'll be traveling to Italy, mainly Rome, in May, and I'm wondering what our

experience will be trying to make sure we're not eating anything that isn't

vegetarian. We are currently lacto-ovo (eat local eggs that are organic and we

know how they are treated, only organic milk) so I don't think it will be too

difficult. But has anyone else been there who can say for sure? I don't want to

have any unfortunate incidents where one of us accidentally eats meat due to the

language barrier or whatnot.

Thanks!

Dana

I went to Italy about 4 years ago.  It was very vegetarian friendly!  LOTS and

LOTS of fresh vegetable dishes, vegetarian soups, vegetarian PIZZAS and

incredible vegetarian pastas everywhere - and my favorite BREADS AND PASTRIES!

Meat is also popular and is served as a second dish (after the pasta).  They

eat a first course which is a pasta dish then the second course is a meat dish

followed by a salad.  A few restaurants had vegetarian options for the second

course but not many.  So I would ask that the first course (veg pasta dish) be

served as the main meal and ate a salad.  Fresh bread is also served at all the

restaurants so you will not go hungry!  There was also an abundance of

vegetable side dishes which was wonderful.

Most of the waiters we encountered knew English and were able to direct to me

the vegetarian dishes but I also had a food translation booklet that I used the

whole time.  HIGHLY recommend some sort of translator!  I found some

vegetarian and meat words to be very similar so read carefully.  :)  Overall,

I found everyone to be very nice and helpful.

You have nothing to worry about - you will have an amazing time in Italy!!

My business partner is vegetarian and has been to Rome twice.  She always RAVES

about the food and how she eats the entire time she's there.  I think you will

be pretty safe.  Not too many countries are as protein-centric as the US, and

you should be able to find many local foods.  ENJOY!
