Maple Syrup Substitute?

Hi All,

I'm looking for substitute for maple syrup in vegan baking recipes. We can't

get it here in where we are right now outside of the US. Using Honey renders

our cakes tasting like honey! We can get Agave, but its VERY $$$. What else

could I use???

Thanks in advance for ideas!

The only other thing that comes to mind is corn syrup (dark or light) - or

depending on where you are and the kind of cakes you're baking, you can use

molasses, or treacle or light syrup. If you can't find those, maybe make

your own simple syrup -it's a cup of water and a cup of sugar, boil together

until sugar is totally dissolved (you can add flavor extracts if you wish or

use plain maybe reduce it a bit more to get a thicker consistency).

Hope those help.

You could try brown rice syrup.

We use blackstrap molasses (not too much, strong taste!), brown rice syrup, or

pureed pumpkin or apple sauce in place of maple syrup.

How about trying dates blended with water or a milk alternative? I

haven't tried it so I don't

know the ratio, but dates are a great, raw, whole food sweetener and

they are available everywhere...

Can you find Golden Syrup? It's cane sugar syrup, similar to the corn syrup

used in the US, and is the norm for baking in Britain and former British

commonwealth countries. I don't know how they process the sugar, though. Maybe

there's a vegan version of cane syrup in the local HFS?
