Dealing with non-vegan cravings while pregnant

Just wondering if others were craving non-vegan food while pregnant? I'm 7 weeks

pregnant with my second child. I was not vegan or vegetarian during my first

pregnancy.

I have a constant bad taste in my mouth (that I didn't have with my 1st) that

often makes me want to gag and am definitely very sensitive to smells. I was

making tofu scramble and hashbrowns the other night and though it smelled

delicious the texture of the tofu totally made me want to gag. I'm guess I'm

looking to hear others' experiences and if they consumed anything while pregnant

that they wouldn't have otherwise. Or just how you got along during this time,

how you dealt with cravings and aversions.

Thanks!

I was not vegan with my first pregnancy but by the time of my second

pregnancy I had been vegan for around 6 months. I was soooo sick, bad

taste, incredibly sensitive to smells etc. So funny - just like you,

all of a sudden tofu made me gag and I CRAVED beef. I wanted a

McDonald's hamburger for breakfast (yuk!)! I did finally eat meat

during the pregnancy because I decided my body might be trying to tell

me it needed something. I am a proponent that our food is more than

just an alphabet so I just followed my body for the most part. Well, I

didn't go to McD's but I did eat meat, also partly because I was losing

weight and it was one of the few things I could keep down. Not that you

can't have a completely healthy vegan pregnancy - just that my own body

I think needed something. You will be happy to know that the sickness

and strange cravings went away after the pregnancy. Tofu is every bit

as wonderful now as it was before! I also craved spicy food for both -

first was Indian and the second was Thai. Go figure.

Hey Nancy!

I'm pregnant and at 23 weeks, and I am vegetarian. I have craved non-veg foods!

It's so weird because I went through this with my first pregnancy as well. With

my first, it was chicken, and now with my second it is turkey breast! Towards

the end of my first pregnancy I could care less about chicken, so it did go

away. I was raised until I was 12 on poultry and fish. At 12, when my sister

was born, my family became vegan and then I became veg. I think that may have

something to do with the cravings...I dunno. Not sure. I wouldn't mind finding

that out myself. But how I dealt with the chicken from my first, Morningstar

Farms chicken strips helped a lot! And then, with my second, I'm trying to make

more a variety of recipes that are veg and bought Veggie Slices or something to

help deal. I dunno if this helps much, but at least you know you are not

alone...

during both of my pregnancies (I'm 7 months along with my 2nd now) meat,

seafood, etc. actually became even more repulsive to me.

I work in a grocery store and walking by the meat or seafood counter made me so

ill. Cravings are hard if your pregnant or not but they can beovercome. They go

away eventually. Try to distract yourself long enough that you forget about the

craving and surround yourself with healthy foods you really enjoy. (There are

times when I can't bring myself to eat anything so I have to take advantage of

the times when I'm actually hungry and fill up on good stuff.)

I did not crave meat at all during any of my pregnancies.  However I did crave

junk food...mostly soy ice cream.  I don't think that that was my body trying to

tell me that I needed the sugar though and I resisted as best as possible.

I hate to admit it but I got MAJOR cravings for cheeseburgers during the first

trimester with both my pregnancies.  The cravings were so strong and made me so

insane that I gave in and ate the cheeseburgers!  I ate about 1-2 week but

finally around the 2nd trimester I didn't care for them anymore.

I say don't torture yourself.  It's not that big a deal.  If you want to give

into your cravings go ahead.  I'm sure the cravings will past too.

Good luck!

Have you tried the meat substitutes like Boca or Morningstar?  I found they

didn't tame my cravings but maybe it will work for you?  :)

I have heard that you crave foods that have the vitamins that you are lacking.

Meat has iron.  Eat some prunes that are extremley high in iron.  See if that

satisfy's your cravings.

I ate so many prunes durring my first pregnancy that people were totally

discusted.  And NO it did not cause me to have the poops.

I've heard that, too, with the cravings (most notably when people are trying to

justify why their kids are eating dirt etc., but I digress) . Many world

cultures also have superstitions re: pregnant women eating what they crave- it's

thought to be bad luck for the baby if they don't give in to their cravings

(it's usually the baby telling them what to crave). I wonder if anyone's ever

actually studied this. I'm going to do a bit of research and I'll post what I

find (if anything). Seems like this group's experience mirrors what I've

experienced: that most  vegetarians crave meat etc. while pregnant.

I have a friend who is not a vegetarian, and with her first child ALL meat

made her gag. She turned to tofu because she couldn't deal with meat in any

way. :)

I had a serious aversion to green peppers when I was pregnant. It was so

strong sometimes I still forget (it's been over 6yrs now) that I actually DO

like them and they don't make me sick. :) I never really had any cravings,

but I sure did love fresh fruit smoothies (I always put tofu in them to help

with that). I had a very uneventful pregnancy - and wasn't prone to as many

issues during it from what I've heard from others. The birth on the other

hand, did not go how I expected it (we did hypnobirthing and I only ended up

laboring in the water for 12 hrs before I gave up and had to have drugs and

a c-section because I didn't progress after all that time, and my water

broke early on, so it was a hard decision - I could have stuck with it for 2

more hours, but then I'd have not had a choice, it would just be done. I'm

just glad that I had midwives because they don't push those, and so I knew

they were serious and I was tired so I opted to just meet my son earlier

rather than later). Phew!

wait, wait, please let's not make the assumption based on a few people that

" most vegetarians crave meat when pregnant. "

I did a little research online also and the result seemed to be that there just

wasn't enough research done.

pregnancy I had been vegan for around 6 months.

Go figure.

I've had 3 vegan pregnancies, but never craved non- vegan food. I did crave

strange things at times, but I'm sure it had nothing to do with something my

body needed... I have done some doula work and seen lots of pregnant moms (veg

and omni) and I think cravings have much more to do with " comfort " than

nutrition. I personally wouldn't " give in " too much to cravings if they are for

unhealthy foods like meat or in the case of my first pregnancy, strawberry

cupcakes (something I have not craved for ten years since that pregnancy) if you

can.

I did find that eating out was a challenge while pregnant with my first because

certain smells really bothered me. With my second and third not so much.

I've never known any vegetarians in real life who craved meat during pregnancy,

some flexiterians, but no veg moms. I was surprised to here of a few on this

list. I don't think it is that common.

Good luck and enjoy this wonderful time!!!!

I'm with (I forgot who it was) that said their cravings centered

around sweets (mine was marshmallows. . . dipped in fudge. . . or

caramel. . . or ganache yes I had access to an ice cream shop so it

was easy to give into) but I was also extremely conscious of getting

the vitamins through prenatal vitamin pills and trying to eat a good

balance of foods. Never craved meat AT ALL. But I've had veg friends

who did. Go figure!

I agree with the idea that most cravings are due to some deficiency of

vitamin/minerals in the diet. When I'm iron deficient, I notice I chomp ice

cubes a lot - which means I need to increase the level of my iron supplements.

Not sure about most vegetarian/vegans craving meat during prenancy. I had no

cravings at all while pregnant, and really expected too, especially since I am

anemic most of the time...

It was, however, one of the most annoying questions/statements during my

pregnancy from people who knew I am vegan: " but you'll crave meat and you'll

need to eat it to make sure you have a healthy baby " . Sigh.

I did not have any meat cravings with my pregnancies, actually sounded even

worse to me, but for the first half I was barely able to hold anything down

anyway, not sure what that means from the baby! lol

There may be some merit to the belief that your body craves things that it's

missing but you still have to take that advice with a grain of salt. I've also

heard your body craves what it's allergic to and that you crave what you are

addicted to. Who knows? If you're eating a well balanced diet and taking some

pre-natal vitamins you're probably getting what you need. You really need to

make the decision based on what you know is best for you and your baby. (and

moms do know!)

this article bugs me a little. why does everyone think it's ok to give into your

cravings when it comes to meat but they say to use caution when talking about

sugar? To me, meat is just as unhealthy.

I was bummed to read that the two veg moms in this article did not go back to

being veg after. What does that say about vegetarians? I can honestly see why

people give in to the cravings, its easier to give in to them when pregnant than

when not pregnant. Even pregnant omni mom's eat a lot of things they wouldn't

normally. I know when I was omni and pregnant w/ my first I ate A LOT and

definitely didn't continue that pattern after she was born. I'm guessing maybe

the vegetarians in the article were not ethical vegetarians so it was easier to

walk away from it.

I did enjoy the second article (link at the bottom of the first). The moms did

go back to their previous diet and the one mom curbed her cravings with other

foods. I did try to make a tofu omlet and tofu scramble instead of using eggs.

But like I mentioned in my first post the texture of tofu made me gag. For a

short while I was really craving eggs. I did end up having my husband purchase

some eggs for me and I did eat one hard boiled and haven't wanted one since.

That's been it so far. I have really, really been thinking a lot about the taste

of some of my old favorite " junk " foods like mini chocolate donuts, some

non-vegan chocolate bars, giant chocolate muffins. I've really thought a lot

about the taste, smell and texture of salmon too. Other than that I don't think

there has bee much else. I've already felt guilt eating that egg. On one hand I

can see myself justifying using this time to just do whatever I want, putting

the baby first and the animals second. Which I guess is what the majority of the

world does every single day which makes me so mad. I think afterwards I would

feel horribly guilty that I put my ethics on the back burner. I think I'd wonder

if I could have had a baby just as healthy and stuck w/ my vegan diet. My last

pregnancy even though I ate anything and everything I was borderline for

gestational diabetes and ended up having to add more protein and started eating

an egg & turkey bacon bagel every morning. In the back of my mind I'm wondering

if I'm going to be in the same boat again with this pregnancy. I just don't know

what is right for me right now. I so absolutely appreciate all of the feedback

and its so good to hear all the different stories with some eating whatever

their body craved and then returning to their regular diet after pregnancy. I'm

thinking if I ended up crossing over to a now and again lacto-ovo veg I'd be

able to deal. I think =) Halloween is right around the corner and the thought of

all the different chocolate candies is making me salivate while typing this.

Thanks again!

I'm vegan and didn't have any non-vegan cravings or experience that famished,

can't-eat-enough feeling. I didn't have many cravings at all...thai tofu in my

last trimester. I gained about 20 lbs., had an 8+ lb. baby, and was wearing my

pre-pregnancy jeans in about 2 weeks! That's a pro for trying to remain vegan!

Meateaters have told me that Morning Star Grillers taste like McD burgers.

Grillers aren't vegan but at least they're vegetarian. Maybe some of you would

find that they stop your cravings for burgers.

One of the Morning Star Farms ones is vegan (maybe it's the Original vegi

burger one? -also says vegan on it - I could swear it says " Original

Grillers " or something similar and then under it " Vegan " . Could be another

one though - they have so many different kinds - but we get them from time

to time. Boca has one that is vegan, too. We get the cheaper of the 2

(varies with sales at different stores) if/when I get them.

If you buy Boca products, keep in mind that the non-organic items are made with
