If you buy Boca products, keep in mind that the non-organic items are made with

GMO soy...

One of the Morning Star Farms ones is vegan (maybe it's the Original vegi

burger one? -also says vegan on it - I could swear it says " Original

Grillers " or something similar and then under it " Vegan " . Could be another

one though - they have so many different kinds - but we get them from time

to time. Boca has one that is vegan, too. We get the cheaper of the 2

(varies with sales at different stores) if/when I get them.

wait, wait, please let's not make the assumption based on a few people that

I did a little research online also and the result seemed to be that there just

I've heard that, too, with the cravings (most notably when people are trying to

justify why their kids are eating dirt etc., but I digress) . Many world

cultures also have superstitions re: pregnant women eating what they crave- it's

thought to be bad luck for the baby if they don't give in to their cravings

(it's usually the baby telling them what to crave). I wonder if anyone's ever

actually studied this. I'm going to do a bit of research and I'll post what I

find (if anything). Seems like this group's experience mirrors what I've

experienced: that most  vegetarians crave meat etc. while pregnant.

I have heard that you crave foods that have the vitamins that you are lacking.

Meat has iron.  Eat some prunes that are extremley high in iron.  See if that

satisfy's your cravings.

I ate so many prunes durring my first pregnancy that people were totally

discusted.  And NO it did not cause me to have the poops.

Have you tried the meat substitutes like Boca or Morningstar?  I found they

didn't tame my cravings but maybe it will work for you?  :)

I was not vegan with my first pregnancy but by the time of my second

pregnancy I had been vegan for around 6 months. I was soooo sick, bad

taste, incredibly sensitive to smells etc. So funny - just like you,

all of a sudden tofu made me gag and I CRAVED beef. I wanted a

McDonald's hamburger for breakfast (yuk!)! I did finally eat meat

during the pregnancy because I decided my body might be trying to tell

me it needed something. I am a proponent that our food is more than

just an alphabet so I just followed my body for the most part. Well, I

didn't go to McD's but I did eat meat, also partly because I was losing

weight and it was one of the few things I could keep down. Not that you

can't have a completely healthy vegan pregnancy - just that my own body

I think needed something. You will be happy to know that the sickness

and strange cravings went away after the pregnancy. Tofu is every bit

as wonderful now as it was before! I also craved spicy food for both -

first was Indian and the second was Thai. Go figure.

I actually tried to eat meat during my pregnancy because I was turned off of

beans and I was worried about getting enough protein (and I was carrying twins

so everything was needed). Definitely was not craving it and I couldn't get

past the gnawing on flesh thing even for the sake of my children. By the way, I

gave birth at 40 weeks to two 7 pounders - both practically unheard of for

twins. I love using that as an example when people say that vegetarians aren't

healthy.

Hi all,

I was a craver of meat during my pregancy. I ate everything in sight though

too. I gained 30kg and had a very long difficult labor which i think now was

because i got so heavy and didnt exercise during my pregancy. I was severely

iron deficient but had i known better i should have stuck to alternative

sources. Oddly enough i remember my first meal of meat served to me after my

son was born. It was chicken and i just hated it. I couldnt eat it. I went

back to vegetarian after that and when my boy was 3 months old i heard about

the horrid thingsd that happen to calves for milk and being a new mum it

really hit me hard and ive been vegan ever since.

I remember when i first became vegan i had an insane craving for KFC, which

i hadnt eaten in years (when i was preg i ate organic local beef, still shit

i know). It wasn't the chicken i wanted it was the skin. I couldn't figure

it out, but it was so intense so my housemate, who was an ex chef

experimented with tofu and marinating it and basically in the end it was the

oiliness of fried tofu that fixed the craving. It must have been just fat

that i needed. I had lost weight quickly and i think it was just my bodys

way of trying to get me to eat the fattiest thing it could imagine!

I do believe in cravings, but like the fat story i think you can envisage

things such as meat that you know have iron etc, when its not the actual

food product you want, but the vitimans. Im craving salt like mad at the

moment and i think its because my thyroid is not in great shape.

Good luck with your pregnancy. I would suggest that when having the craving,

think about what is in it and look for the alternative.

Woo Hoo! I love hearing stories like this! And Jill, apologies if my response

was a bit harsh. I think I had late night brain issues. I, too, was one of those

with NO meat cravings (but major dairy, like I said), but I think it's very

interesting that so many do- even the diehards among us.

I googled it. Their burgers that use to be Grillers are now called Grillers

Prime (vegetarian). Their newer vegan ones are now Grillers. They DO make so

many now compared to decades ago when I first became a veggie! The veggie

burgers my brother-in-law said tasted like McD's is the Grillers Prime(not the

vegan ones). I think I already mentioned that he thinks he's been eating a lot

of soy in his McD burgers! :) I've eaten them both (was a veggie, now a vegan),

and the Grillers Prime are much better than the vegan. The vegan are ok with

condiments on them. Amy's makes some vegan burgers that are pretty good and

don't have soy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I craved meat during pregnancy but I sort of think it was because I thought it

would make me feel better because it was the one thing I hadn't tried eating (I

am vegetarian, not vegan so I was eating lots of cheese and yogurt which was

very comforting to my belly during that time). I felt so nauseated and had a

terrible taste in my mouth as well. Honestly though, I don't think it would have

made me feel any better. I didn't try it. Hope you feel better soon. :)
