Hi Maggie. I know you're concerns about feeding your child. My son has a mild case of autism and is very picky. There are actually theories on whether wheat and milk aggravate autism and many people have had good luck removing wheat and milk from their children's diet. My son is vegetarian like us but I fear taking milk and wheat out of his diet as he does not eat much anyway and is on the lower end of normal for the wieght scale.

I have heard there is a vegan for milk and wheat elimination diet, I would like to find out about it. As far as just switching your son from meat to vegetarian, it isn't too big of a deal. We had the same conflict in my family, but when we eat vegetarian so often he tended to eat that way anyway.

Autistic kids get so stuck in routine I think there is a danger of getting them hooked on McDonalds hamburgers and fries to the exclusion of healthier foods. I almost had to force my son to eat healthier, just not buy the crap and trust he would eat over starve (of course I would step in before he really did) but then he started to eat more fruit and healthier bread he was shunning before.

Anyway, welcome aboard! :)

Humboldt County, CAI just joined up last night. My DH (Ian) and I are brand new vegetarians. We may go down the vegan path later on. Ian announced his wish to go vegetarianin the car yesterday, saying he didn't like the way a lot of animals, particularly chickens, were treated and that he no longer wanted to eat them. I agree, and I'd like to know more about it. I'm sure none of the animals lead a good life!We have a six year old daughter who has autism, and he wants her to continue eating meat! I don't, and feel that since she loves things like vegetables, beans of allkinds, pasta and rice it would be an easy job to have her eating vegetarian, too. He's worried she won't get all the nutrients she needs. Is there anywhere/anythingwe can read which would make this clearer? I know many children grow up to be healthier eating a vegetarian

diet. I'm leery of her being vegan, I must admit.I like to knit and crochet (I don't use wool; not for moral/ethical reasons, but it just doesn't get cold enough in San Jose to warrant wearing it and besides, it makes meitch!) When we go somewhere that gets cold, I wear polar fleece.Where can we get non-leather sneakers and belts? If anyone can suggest any reading matter for Ian and myself, please do.MaggieSan Jose CANo matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, turn back. -Turkish proverbFact: Each gallon of gas used by a car contributes almost 20 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. A single car driving 1,000 miles a month adds up to 120 tons of CO2 annually. We tried it and didn't see much difference at all. However, a child in

her class at school stops talking if he gets a grain of gluten!

Several doctors have told

me it's definitely worth trying though.

I'm lucky that my daughter eats fairly well, though she is also on the

low end of the weight (and height) scale - but then, I only make five

feet! DH is a six footer.

I think I'll slowly introduce veggie snacks and veggie things into her

lunch box.
