Guest guest
Anna Hewitt Relishes the Ordinary at Shelburne Farms Far from being bored by the routines of farm life, Anna Hewitt finds pleasure in everything from pulling up purple potatoes to learning about the marvels of corn silk. Hewitt, this week's Grist diarist, is an apprentice at Shelburne Farms, a sustainable farm and nonprofit environmental education center in Vermont. She digs, hoes, waters, and tills, all in the name of providing fresh produce for the farm's inn, where visitors come from around the country to appreciate Vermont's pastoral pleasures in an eco-friendly setting. Some days Hewitt gets help harvesting garlic from visiting schoolchildren. On more solitary days, as she cuts salad greens, she wonders about the ethics of keeping squirrels away from her carrots and dreams of a world where people get where they need to go by bicycling on tree-lined paths. Read about seeding, weeding, and living simply -- only on the Grist Magazine website. only in Grist: The universe in a corn husk -- a week in the life of Anna Hewitt, Shelburne Farms <http://www.gristmagazine.com/dearme/hewitt080403.asp?source=daily>
