Guest guest
Yeahy!! I just have to tell you how excited I am that I have found a new place to eat (just discovered I can't have Subway bread, and am so very nearly over salad). Ok, it is called Nabiha's Kitchen, and is a mixture of mainly Lebanese food with Mediterranean foods. It is one of those down a side alley type of places, where the older wife cooks everything herself, on an old cast Iron stove. Very authentic. I walked in an said 'I am vegan, do you have anything I can have for lunch' and she said Yes! Woohoo. She is actually vegetarian herself, and actually knows what vegan means. That has got to be a first. Anyway she spilt out a half dozen choices, in a heavy accent, so I had very little idea what she was on about, and when she realised this, she pulled everything out to show me! I said, umm..... may I have one of those and one of those? I ended up with a veggie roll (filo pastry, olive oil, no butter) and another pastry with spinach and sundried tomatoes in it. OH MY GOD I have never tasted anything so good. Rich and flavoursome and absolutely divine. The veggies had some sort of curry type thing around them. She also gave me a free sample of her chips, cooked in a pot on the oven, 100% olive oil! Absolutely divine, even Ben tried those. She marked what I could have on the menu for me, and added a couple of other things she makes, but it seems she has no real set menu, but makes what she feels like that day. She marked; Lentil and rice Okra bean casserole Lentil and Spinach soup Fresh vegetarian bean casserole Fresh vegetarian chick peas casserole Vegi Kibbi roll Lentil burger Falafel roll Vine leaf roll Cabbage rolls Spinach Pie Vegi pastry roll potato rolls Needless to say I went back for dinner tonight, and said 'What is yummy today'? She obviously remembered me, as soon as I walked in the door, and recommended the spicy potatoes with lentils and rice. I swear I died and went to heaven when I tasted it. She thought I might need a glass of water, but there was very little heat in it at all. The lentils and rice where divine on their own, and where so smooth as to almost be buttery, with a delicate, yet morish flavor. The potatoes where the same, shredded quite fine and cooked in spices like a casserole. They are a little expensive, tonight's meal was $9 without a drink, but definitely worth it. She has quite a few awards on the wall, too. She is open 10am till 8pm, monday to saturday, but was open yesterday at lunchtime when I went in. Sorry to ramble, but you rarely find a good place round here, let alone one where I have a choice! - let alone one this huge! I am very excited. She also said that if I ring before I come, she will make sure that she has something 'pure vegetarian' for me, something special. I am enamoured with the place. It made me feel special, too, to be called 'pure vegetarian' ;*) Gotta go, this is making me hungry...
