Guest guest
Hi All! I'm new to the list. I was searching for milk free stuff & came across this site. My son has a milk allergy, so I've been looking into the Vegan lifestyle. I'm going to make the change slowly so everyone gets used to it. Anyway, does anyone know any good vegan chocolate, deserts, cookies, cereal to recommend? I live on Long Island, NY. My son is 15mos old. Also when somegthing says pareve, is that a good thing to look for in vegan stuff? Thanks Janet

Guest guest
Pareve is a Jewish term, meaning containing neither meat nor milk ingredients. However, " nondairy " creamer with casein (a milk protein) in it is considered pareve (because the amount of milk is considered insignificant), as are fish, eggs, and honey. I still don't get why the flesh of, say, a chicken is considered fleishedig (meat), but the flesh of a fish is not. An omni friend of mine thinks it's cause cows and chickens are warm blooded and fish are not. Like a zero cholesterol value, pareve is an indication you can go to the ingredient list. Guest guest
Hi Danielle I can never understand why people think that birds and fish don't count as animals!!! Fools. Guest guest
Jo, well, there are people who think that 'cause chickens and fish are " dumb, " it's OK to torture and eat them. So is it OK to toture profoundly mentally handicapped people " because they're dumb " ? As for my hostile mom, I told her to pretend I was allergic to dairy and eggs and just didn't eat meat. Actually, in the last few years I was omni, I had trouble eating meat, so I could make an argument for a food intolerance. Y'know, I've never tried that in a restaurant, but it makes me think it might not be a bad idea. If a place doesn't worry about an ethical standpoint, they'd certainly be concerned about getting sued over an incident of allergic reaction! BB Peter --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
I use this excellent tactic in restaurants - it gets them rooting for the cook or chef and checking out the packaging, even giving it to me to confirm, as they now need to protect themselves. Eat with assurance without even mentioning the word 'vegan'. Nice and simple!
