Guest guest
Folks, Concerned citizens of the Hudson River Valley need to tell the EPA that ALL the region's waters should continue to receive full federal protection. Please take a moment to tell Administrator Whitman not to weaken the Clean Water Act. A nationwide rulemaking under way could have dramatic implications for surface and groundwater resources in the Hudson River Valley and the New York City Watershed. Click this link to learn more and take action-- it should only take you a few minutes: http://ga1.org/campaign/not_weaken_cleanwateract In short, the Administration will soon be officially proposing to remove most smaller streams, creeks, wetlands, and isolated waterways from federal Clean Water Act protection. These smaller waterways form the majority of most watersheds, more than 60% of both the 14,000 square mile Hudson River watershed and 2,000 square mile New York City drinking supply watershed. Waterways such as these perform critical roles, such as controlling flood waters, replenishing groundwater supplies, filtering surface waters, and providing critical habitat for fish and wildlife. Thanks to diligent enforcement by federal and state agencies and citizen groups for 30 years, the Clean Water Act is nearly single-handedly responsible for restoring the Hudson River watershed from the region's sewer to it's historic gem. The Act also has played a critical role in protecting the unfiltered drinking water supply for nearly nine million New Yorkers. PLEASE forward to other concerned individuals and groups. Comments are due to the EPA by April 16th. Riverkeeper will be submitting substantive comments and would appreciate any input or collaboration. Please contact me (our Hudson River office 845-424-4149 x-230) or Leila Goldmark (our NYC Watershed office 914-422-4126) with any questions or comments. THANKS! Basil ******* Basil B.
