actually..besides having a common progeniter..i would assume that mushrooms that live on animals would have the closest dna structure to the animal kingdom... Lynda Jun 1, 2005 10:29 AM Re: mushrooms Did you try wild mushrooms? Most mushrooms grown within easy commutedistance of a horse facility (race track, horse farms, etc.) are grown inthe manure and straw from those facilities. In a college biology coarse Itook we did DNA on various plants and mushrooms were a fav because their DNAis slightly different depending on where they are grown and for how manygenerations. I would think the closer to animal DNA mushrooms were the onesgrown in manure composts maybe?Lynda-Mary Minihane <minihWednesday, June 01, 2005 7:10 AM mushrooms> I just thought that I would put this out for discussion. I doubt that the dna has anything to do with your dislike of them - probably

just the texture.

I had never had mushrooms until I met Colin - I guess my family didn't like

them. I use them a lot now.

Not sure of the DNA of the fungus, but I LOVE mushrooms!

Don't think I'd be a happy camper without them.

Sorry, I have never seen the show " When fungus attack " .

I think you are being a bit argumentive here.

You may as well then go into the fact that plants are living things

and technically they may scream and we just can't hear it.

Tis definately understandable! Unfortunately society tends to put

people with " differences " in anything they do into a defense

position.

It took me awhile too before I could say " I'm happy for your beliefs

and glad I have mine " .

Ah gee, then I guess you don't want to hear about the other experiments we

did in science and hooking trees and carrots and turnips up to EEG machines

and the pain waves being the same as in humans???

You may not have been able to resist, but I'm afraid your facts are wrong.

The " sound " picked up by EEG is a release of gas, and is more akin to animal

farting than screaming.

I don't like mushrooms, only when disguised flavor with something else

like in a veggie burger. however, I " experimented " with them in college

a little bit, my room mate, would offer me some in a yogurt she used to

eat, I did it just to be cool, but yuck.

Um, I know I've been gone awhile, so I gotta ask. Is this still a

family friendly forum? Cause if so I cannot reply to this the way I

want to!

;)

I have never had mushrooms in yogurt before, nor even thought of it.

I guess the closet I have come to with mushrooms and that type of

creamy base would be with hollandaise. Tho that was moons ago in

another life.

Hi Ed,

I'm not sure if college kids still do this, but in the 90's when I went

to college,

kids would put hallucinogenic mushrooms in pudding or yoghurt to

disguise the flavor, it was something found at parties or done on the

weekends, they would write crazy poetry together.

I went to a Hippie college upstate new york, I'm sure it is different

today.

That really impresses me, so many people don't like mushrooms period. It's nice

hearing your 11 yr old loved it. I know our JLyn in here doesn't lot many

veggies but she loves the portabello mushrooms also. There are only 2 in my

family that will eat them, they are sure missing a good thing......Donna

wanted me to make an extra one for her to take to school for lunch.

Mushrooms

1. Mushrooms are one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world.

2. Mushrooms are very filling despite being low in kilojoules, making

them a great 'weight control' food.

3. Mushrooms provide more than a quarter of your daily needs of the

essential vitamins riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and biotin.

4. Mushrooms are a good source of the essential minerals selenium and

copper.

5. Mushrooms are a wonderful source of fibre, to keep you healthy on

the insides.

There are dried mushroom/salt/pepper/herb combination on the market

in shaker bottles that are excellent. It brings the mushroom flavor into a dish

but the mushroom is ground very fine with the S & P and herbs.

Maybe fine chopping mushrooms in food processor would help?

There's also truffle oil... expensive, but delicious... tastes like mushrooms

without the texture.
