Guest guest
I have been trying some different vegan recipes & I've come across some that call for natural yeast flakes. I've searched grocery stores in 2 towns & a health food store & can't find it. Is it comparable to brewers yeast? Also there are recipes calling for whole wheat " pastry " flour. All I can find is regular whole wheat or white whole wheat flour, but no whole wheat " pastry " flour. Anyone know where to find these or the substitutes? I've found some good recipes on fatfreevegan.com & vegweb.com.

Whole wheat pastry flour is a wonderful product that can be purchased at health food stores. It is desirable for baking because of it's protein content (lower than normal flours) and the effect that it has on the completed product. It is NOT a gluten-free product, though, so if you are vegan AND gluten free, it won't work for you. LaDonna PS: Brewers Yeast and Nutritional Yeast Flakes can be used interchangeably. Brewer's yeast is a by-product of the brewing industry and may contain gluten. It will have a slightly more bitter flavor than nutritional yeast flakes.
