I purchased some Textured Soy Protein Granules at the health food store.

They told me that they are vegan and gluten free. I thought they might be

interested to incorporate into our diet. Does anyone have any good recipes?

Thanks!

This is my favourite recipe and is great if you can find a good cheese

substitute. Every so often I make just the schnitzel part of this

recipe, shaping them longer and skinnier, and use them in a Subway

type roll. I'll occasionally add TSP to a bolognaise pasta sauce.

" Chicken " Parmagiana

1/2 cup textured soy protein

1/2 cup boiling water

1 tablespoon (3 tsp) vegetarian chicken bouillon powder

1/2 cup vegan GF pancake mix, dry (approximately)

2/3 cup crushed cornflakes (approximately)

(and/or GF breadcrumbs or rice crumbs)

salt, pepper, other seasonings

oil for frying

1 cup pasta sauce (tomato, onions, herbs etc.)

100 g (3 1/2 oz) mozzarella-style vegan cheese

(preferably one that melts)

1. Put 1/2 cup hot water in a bowl. Stir in bouillon powder. Soak

textured soy protein in this liquid for 10 minutes.

2. Mix in just enough pancake mix to make a cohesive mixture that can

be formed into patties. Mix in salt, pepper, and other seasonings to

taste (I use nutritional/savoury yeast, sage, thyme, onion powder and

garlic powder and don't add any salt).

3. Put crushed cornflakes in a plate. Shape the mix into 2 large flat

oval-shaped discs (about 5 " long x 4 " wide x 1/2 " thick). Coat in

cornflakes, covering them completely.

4. Preheat oven to 200 C (390 F).

5. Heat some oil on medium heat in a heavy frying pan. Fry discs in

oil until crispy, turning (carefully) occasionally.

6. Transfer to a baking tray. Top with some spaghetti sauce, and some

soy mozzarella (I used a UK product called Cheezly that actually melts.)

7. Pop into the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes to melt the cheese and

heat through.

Serves 2.

One thing to note about this recipe is that is is quite wet and

sticky, so use wet hands to form into rough patties and finish the

shaping when they are partially coated in crumbs. -OR- Form thick oval

patties and flatten into schnitzel shapes in the pan. ~ Kim.

We use it for a sloppy joe type deal... saute onions, add water and

TSP... when it looks like hamburger meat, add bbq sauce... My husband

likes this better than the real thing. He is a die hard meat eater,

and

requests this a lot...

We also use it in pasta sometimes... just cook the way I added

before,

just add italian seasonings & the pasta sauce.

For taco filling, I add mexican spices like cumin, garlic, onion.. or

just cheat and get a GF taco seasoning & whip it up that way... Any

left overs can be used to mix with beans and make tostadas the next

day... or freeze the concoction until you want mexican again. (We eat

mexican food several days a week, if not every day at my house, so it

gets eaten up within 48 hours.)

You can also use taco seasoning mix and 1 onion (chopped) to the TSP

mix... saute the onions first, toss it in a crockpot. Add a can of

pinto, kidney and whatever other kinds of beans you like (rinsed)

along with a

can of chunked tomatoes...(We use about 4 cans of beans). and it is

an

EASY chili... it is really good. My family will devour this. Another

easy method is to presoak dried beans in your crock pot before you go

to bed. In the morning, dump out the water, add more and start it.

Stir

fry the onions, TSP and seasonings, dump it in, and dinner will be

ready in about 5 hours. :) It is nice for hubbies who do not come

home

on regular hours... it will always be hot & ready to eat. :)

That's pretty much all I have used it for. :) Hope that helps.

Aubrey
