Guest guest
Here's some info on oats in the GF diet: " Oats is a grain the merits special attention. Oats are believed safe in patients with celiac disease although this was not always the case. The problem with oat products is not the grain but rather the manufacturing process. When oats are processed in the same facilities as wheat, contamination can occur even with the best cleaning protocol. Oat products can now be found that are not cross contaminated. These can be tried after an initial period of 6 months to see if they can be tolerated. Most, but not all patients can tolerate pure oat products. " " [...] The Finland study found that oats taken in moderate amounts (50 grams per day) for six months was not associated with any damage to the small intestinal mucosa in adult celiacs who were in remission. Remission may be defined as being in a non-active or inactive phase of celiac sprue as any disease. The conclusions of the article and an accompanying editorial state that moderate amounts of oats are safe to eat over six months to a year for the celiac patient. " " The appropriateness of oats in the gluten-free diet has been pondered for over 20 years. Studies continue with mixed conclusions on this subject of whether the consumption of oats evokes an immune response in those with celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. Until it can be determined if the responses that occur are due to cross-contamination in commercially processed oats, to the protein structure of the grain or to other individual differences, CSA recommends that excluding oats is the only risk free choice for those on a gluten-free diet. As always, the individual is responsible to make decisions that he or she deems best for optimum health and well-being.
