Vegetarians on a gluten free diet wanted!

Hello :)

I'm writing a book - Guide to Gluten Free for Vegetarians....The vegetarian

society are

backing my book as are a few coeliac organisations. Finding people following a

gluten free

diet who have stayed or become vegetarian would be invaluable.

I'm a vegetarian and have been for... ooh at least 11 years now and on and off

in

childhood.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. I was advised, strongly

advised, by

the nutritionist and the gastroenterologist to start eatin meat again as

remaining

vegetarian would make my life seriously difficult.

Eating meat is not and was not an option.

Since most of the vegetarian 'meats' are made with wheat or gluten I can no

longer eat

them. Most processed vegetarian food also contains gluten.

I have had to go back to basics, which although very healthy can be very

frustrating. With a

little adaptability and resolve I quickly built up a new way of cooking.

Eating out is a struggle for new patients on a gluten free diet, usually there

is a vegetarian

option (lets face it, it's going to be pasta!) and a gluten free option but very

often the two

are not the same dish. Explaining that I can't have soy sauce in my vegetables

at a chinese

restaraunt has become a common discussion and more often than not I'm left with

the

option of a baked potato in most places (if they even do baked potato...)!

I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience eating gluten free and

remaining

vegetarian...

Welcome to Vegan and Gluten Free! You have found a group of us --- about

700 veggies who are also gluten free! We understand all the frustrations

you are experiencing! Actually, most of us here are more than

vegetarian --- but are vegan as well (no eggs, no dairy including cheese, no

meat or fish). I hope our experiences can support and encourage you as you

start this new lifestyle. Rest assured, there's lots of wonderful food

available to us, although I will admit that eating out is difficult!

Hi LaDonna.

I've been veggie for ten years and gluten free for three so not really a newbie!

The collective information from so many gluten free veggies/vegans will help me

with my

book.

So fed up of gluten free books that are not veggie or veggie books that are no0t

gluten free I

thought I'd better get writing! :)
