Yes, Alice, this is a vegan list. All recipes shared here should be 'vegan', although as per past conversation and discussion on VGF, posting honey in recipes is acceptable. The reason is that there are entirely wonderful cookbooks and recipe sources out there that are vegan, but believe that honey is a vegan food. I know, technically it is not, but because the recipes are so good and the honey is easy to substitute (agave syrup, brown rice syrup, maple syrup) we have decided to post recipes with honey without altering them. That way list members can see what the 'tested' recipe used and then make their own substitutions according to their favorite replacement. We are trying to keep the 'integrity' of the original recipe as submitted by the recipe developer. I don't recall any butter recipes being submitted, but it's possible I might have missed them. Sometimes recipes using ghee are submitted, but they are referring to vegetable ghee which is not dairy based. Again, this is per previous conversation on the list and sometimes we forget to keep new members up to speed. I apologize for that. I also missed the 'fish' recipe --- sorry, but I'm sure the 'offender' won't do it again --- and Kim won't post recipes that aren't according to these guidelines in our files. Lots of list members here aren't vegan, but are gluten-free and have joined us for help with ideas and recipes. I am DELIGHTED they are here with us so we can share together. Sometimes they forget we are vegan as well, but that's okay --- we'll send a gentle reminder now and then if necessary. I think there are vegans here as well who aren't gluten-free, so it goes both ways. We'll send them reminders as well, if necessary (wink). Thanks for your concerns, Alice. Reminders are always good to keep us on the right track! LaDonna PS: I'm the list moderator who started this group five or six years ago after her husband was diagnosed as celiac. Guess what! I was just diagnosed as having a wheat allergy. I'm now being very careful to avoid wheat. My husband thinks it's really nice to have company. Guest guest
hi ladonna thanks for that, and for setting up such a great group. i just wanted to clarify that it wasn't a fish recipe that was posted, just someone asking whether another group member ate fish. best wishes alice On 19 Sep 2006, at 14:12, ilovetocookvegan2 wrote: > , Alice Leonard > <alice wrote: > > > i may be way out of line here, and being way too picky, but... it > has irritated me in the past that people are talking eating/posting > recipes which contain ingredients like butter and honey. this is a > vegan list, right?! > > Yes, Alice, this is a vegan list. Guest guest
Sorry, I posted the question about eating fish. I didn't realize this group was so strictly vegan, since it seems people are open to discussing all sorts of foods and give all sorts of advice. My apologies. It was an innocent mistake.
