Guest guest
Elchanan, I am still needing to learn more about the garlic and oninion thing.... In the practice of Homeopathy it is thought that a small amount of poison will cure symptoms and disease. This was invented by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-18430) So by this theory it would be acceptable to think that a small amount of garlic would help to cure an illness. Which might be why some people used garlic to help cure various maladies. In medical history going back to the begining....medicine was practiced by " witch doctors, barbers, sorcerers " Garlic and onions were used to cure various illnesses. Public health and hygiene began to attract attention during the 18th century. It was discovered that washing hands would go a long way to improving health. In fact, hygiene is the primary factor in safegarding against disease. In the time of the plague, I'm sure hygiene was not on the top of the list of what was taught. Why some survive and some don't: There is such a thing that is called the " Morbidity rate " The is the number of sick persons or cases of a disease within a certain populaton. A certain percent of the population will succumb to various diseases. Then there is what is called the " Mortality rate " which is the ratio of the number of deaths in a given population. There are a number of factors involved as to why one person will die of something and the other will not, you have touched on great examples of these things. Jeannie your time is the most cherished gift of all, tomorrow is promised to no one. And it has been observed that they all occur cyclically. Of course, data are limited going back in time, and suppositions are made. But the idea of some cyclicality is interesting to ponder. As for why some survived, each of us has a different level of vitality, based upon our mental health, diet, activity, exposure to fresh air and sunshine, previous injuries, etc. It's like culling any herd, the hardiest most vital tend to survive. But a 50% wipeout is pretty massive. Of course, at times in history, things have been far worse. I thought it was over 50% died in Europe. But it has been a while since I read about it. It also seems there was some ideas as to why the ones that survived the plague, did survive. But I cannot quite remember what they said. (I will say that I don't remember garlic being mentioned.) LOL. Belinda
