Hi Elchanan (and anyone else who is interested)

I read your comment on the Raw Food group the other day (about the baby who was

constipated for a long time) with great interest. I have a daughter with a very

similar problem - starting about a year ago, when she was about 8 months old she

suddenly became constipated. It was around the time that she started solids,

but was mostly breastfeeding. I have seen her regular pediatrician about this

without much success in resolving the problem.

My husband has started to wonder if it is psychological in nature. She spends a

lot of time pushing (legs drawn up) with no results. Sometimes I hold her on

the toilet, again without much result (usually none). After a few days I

generally give her a baby laxative enema type thing (glycerine) and she goes

immediately. The weird thing is that instead of bending her legs or pulling

them up she straightens them. Last summer when I first started researching this

problem of hers on the internet I read about how important it is for a person to

have their legs bent to have a successful elimination.

The whole thing is just very strange and puzzling to me. She is still nursing

frequently and of the foods that she eats, it is over 50% raw. We have a green

smoothie in the morning with flax oil added (peds recommendation). Last summer

the pediatrician recommended peaches, plums, pears, and prunes, and that is

pretty much all she had for the entire summer - still with no results.

About a month ago on one of the raw boards someone mentioned Dr. Schultz and his

herbal constipation remedies. I ordered that, and she has been taking pretty

large doses. She did go once on her own, but in general I find that I am still

needing to help her with the enema things every 3rd day. I just don't want her

to get too backed up. I am thinking that her muscles are just atrophied from

not pushing on her own for over a year. The Dr. Schultz' formula has definitely

changed the consistency. It is not the big adult sized logs anymore, but much

skinnier and softer.

We have another appointment scheduled with her pediatrician today, now that it

has been going on for nearly a year, but I am concerned that he will want to

send us to some kind of " specialist " who I probably wouldn't trust because he

may want to do some invasive explorations, and my daughter is only 20 months

old. I have been debating with myself all week on whether or not to keep the

appointment. I wanted to bring up the psychological aspect with him, but don't

know if he'll just " pooh pooh " it (pun intended :-). I read your post about the

possibility of it being psychological and was very intrigued. First of all, how

did you find out about those details that caused the little boy's problem?

Secondly, did you have to meet them in person? If so, are you in Southern

California?

I really hope that you will be able to help us out! Thanks very much.
