Guest guest
I've been a vegetarian off and on my whole life and really decided this year to just give up meat completely! Now my son age 15 and husband are making fun of me and every meal ask if I will be eating this meat or that meat! My husband said " Plants scream when you pick them and make oxygen for us to breath! Your hurting humans and farmers by being a vegan! " What would you say to a coment like that from the person you love dearly? Guest guest
Hmmmmm....if he actually hears the plants scream maybe he needs to have a long chat with a shrink. Or you could tell them that by going veggie the money saved can upgrade his ground beef to sirloin.
Guest guest
I'm sorry you're getting such negative feedback from your family. I've been in that position - I'm sure many of us have - and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Yes, plants do provide oxygen - the same oxygen that is polluted by factories that process meat. While your family may point out that " plants scream, " they're completely overlooking the fact that animals raised for food suffer from birth until death. If they believe in Qi at all - they're taking that life of suffering into themselves with every bite. At the risk of sounding like a zealot, I urge you to check out PETA's " Meat's Not Green " campaign. If you'd like, I can off-list you some information. Guest guest
I would say - " Darlings, please eat whatever you desire...and I will do the same. I am not comfortable killing creatures for the purpose of eating them...please pass the salt " ________________________________ Michelle <msteen Friday, January 9, 2009 4:37:00 PM What to say? Guest guest
Sorry you are going through this now, MichelleS. My best advice is to let it ride; they will eventually get bored picking on you, especially if you don't react strongly and stick to your ideals. My family used to get some pleasure from picking on me, but when I just joked back and they saw the " jokes " weren't messing with me, so they stopped. You know how it goes with bullies and jokers: If they can get a reaction, or a " rise out of you " , it makes it more interesting to them to tease. ~ PT ~ Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family ...in another city. ~ George Burns ``````````````````````````````````````` , " Michelle " <msteen wrote: > > I've been a vegetarian off and on my whole life and really decided this > year to just give up meat completely! > > Now my son age 15 and husband are making fun of me and every meal ask > if I will be eating this meat or that meat! > > My husband said " Plants scream when you pick them and make oxygen for > us to breath! Guest guest
You should talk to them (seperately and not at meal time)and tell them that what they say hurts your feelings and you would appreciate it if they would stop. People don't want to hurt the ones they love. Guest guest
This is true. I've heard that even if someone tries to bring up an arguement or discussion about vegetarianism around a meal where meat is present that it's not a good time to engage in it--better to wait for a time that is not centered around a meal. --- On Sat, 1/10/09, artichoke72x <artichoke72x wrote: You should talk to them (seperately and not at meal time)and tell them that what they say hurts your feelings and you would appreciate it if they would stop. Guest guest
Yes I think it would be a good idea to just be defenseless as a way of getting the comments to stop. However I do have one thought to offer the " plants feel pain " agruement: meat-eaters actually kill ALOT more plants and trees than vegetarians and vegans do, as this is the main reason why the rain forest is being cleared--to grow crops for livestock and then not to mention all the grass and plants the livestock eats, so if one is really concerned about plants, that is another good reason to go veg! --- On Sat, 1/10/09, ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: Sorry you are going through this now, MichelleS. Guest guest
Actually being a meat eater HURTS humans! It contributes both to global famine(as many pounds of much-needed grains are imported from the countries where they are sorely needed) and to the MOST dangerous job in America, being slaughterhouses. Slaughterhouses have 9 TIMES the injury rate as that of coal miners working in Appalachia! Not to mention it's the least desirable job there is with the highest turnover rate, it's emotionally taxing, stressing, and demanding for the underpaid workers who have the unfortunate job of " sticking " and dismembering live animals, and contributes to alcoholism and domestic problems at home for them. Plus it's the worst job for immigrants who are here illegally, as they can't defend their rights. It also desensitizes workers, as one worker confessed in a signed affadavit, which you can read excerpts from as well as several others in Gail Eisnitz's book, " Slaughterhouse " , who said that soon after he quit feeling for the animals he quit feeling for people as well. So anyway, not to rant on too much here, but I just wanted to add some food for thought to the foolish statement about being veg hurting people, as it actually benefits MUCH more than omnivores realize and understand. --- On Fri, 1/9/09, Michelle <msteen wrote: Michelle <msteen What to say?
